It's time to be honest with yourself-- again.



You know it already, it goes through your head several times before you decide to buy a product that claims to have a quick fix solution to weight gain. But the idea of a pill that magically makes you lose fat and an advertiser who uses big words and graphics to convince you that its scientifically conceivable makes you break, right? At least that is how I feel. Even if you don't buy it you want to, right?



Since there are some scams going on I decided to do some research and find out how consumers can tell if a weight loss product will be effective. What I found was a report issued by The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) about claims that weight loss companies make when they try to sell their products to you.



And guess what, the feeling you've had all along is true. They came up with some weight loss claims that are, frankly, impossible.



Let me be more specific. You've heard of weight loss products that say you'll drop the pounds just by wearing a special belt or rubbing cream on your trouble spots. It would be nice, but according to the FTC there is no substantial evidence that using external products will generate any weight loss.



They also found that a product can't "block" the absorption of calories enough to cause significant weight loss, if any at all. It is simply (and unfortunately) a fact that the calories you take in have to be burned off or they are stuck there.



Another claim says that you can lose weight without diet or exercise. Not true. In fact, you may even gain weight if your unaltered diet includes eating more calories than your daily needs. To be more specific, the potential weight loss from a non-prescription pill that increases metabolism or blocks absorption of calories likely won't be more than a quarter to a third pound per week. That's a lot less than most of these drug companies claim.



One last false claim: a product will cause permanent weight loss. Just like fat can always be burned off, it can always be added on.



So now that you know some of the things that don't work you can focus on what does. There are many products out there that do work, and work well. Those that promote overall health like zone diet meals, athletic equipment, fitness videos, some appetite suppressants and many more weight loss products have a good degree of effectiveness on certain individuals. Just do a little research to find out what will work best for your body and your lifestyle.

    A Rapid Weight Loss Diet - Is It Any Good For You?

    The so called rapid weight loss diet is one of the closest things to a crash diet. One description of a rapid weight loss diet is this - A crash diet is a diet which is extreme in its deprivations - typically severely restricting calorie intake. Meant to achieve rapid weight loss, a crash diet differs from outright starvation only slightly. Crash diets are typically unhealthy and are rarely - if ever - recommended by doctors or dietitians. Crash diets may lead to malnutrition.

    When someone discontinues a crash diet, the "rebound-effect" is often experienced. This causes a person to eat far more than normal, causing them to regain both the weight that was recently lost due to the diet as well as additional weight. This is caused by an evolutionary trait of the human race that historically only took effect in times of famine: after a famine ended, people's bodies naturally craved to regain both the weight that was lost, plus additional weight as well, in order to protect themselves in case of another famine.

    I think it's apparant that this type of diet is not in most peoples best interest. Let's take it a little further. It has been observed that some crash dieting or rapid weight loss can lead to Anorexia. This is defined by a loss of appetite or lack of desire to eat.

    When people experience appetite loss, decreased energy consumption will subsequently lead to weight loss. When inadequate calories are consumed, the body may become weaker and less able to tolerate many chalenges. As body weight decreases, cachexia sets in, and a general failure to thrive may make it more difficult to fight off illness and infection. A poor response to cancer treatments, reduced quality of life, and death may result from substantial weight loss. The spiraling effect of a patient's reluctance to eat is a source of frequent anxiety for caregivers. Weight loss due to anorexia may be temporary or may continue at a life-threatening pace if the patient continues to consume inadequate energy to sustain body weight.

    The most commonly known form of anorexia is satiation following the consumption of food. This can happen in all normal humans and is known as postprandial anorexia. It's important and healthy as it prevents overeating and of course obesity. Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by voluntary starvation and exercise stress. Anorexia nervosa is a complex disease, involving psychological and sociological components.

    Needless to say, it is important to ensure that if you decide to take on a diet, make sure it is healthy and can supply the nutrients people need to carry on life in a healthy and vigorous manner. One of the most highly praised diets existing to day is the Mediterranean diet mostly due to its history and the formal research that has been undertaken. It is well worth your while to look into this particlular diet further if you have the slightest doubt about undertaking a rapid weight loss diet.

    If a woman’s waistline is larger than 35 inches (40 inches for men), the risk for a variety of health conditions such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes, can greatly increase. Studies show that fat stored around our waist poses a greater health risk than the fat we store in other parts of our bodies. This is just another reason for both men and women to take the necessary steps to reduce unhealthy belly fat.



    CAUSES OF BELLY FAT



    Gender and age are the largest determining factors for where we store fat on our bodies. Men tend to store their fat around their waistline when they put on weight. Women, before menopause, store their fat around their hips, thighs, and butt. After menopause, however, the fat becomes thicker around their waistline.



    Most people eat a diet high in refined sugar and other simple carbohydrates. These foods raise blood sugar levels, leading to high insulin levels. The high insulin levels cause fat to be deposited into the belly area rather than other regions of the body. Put simply, belly fat is largely due to an unhealthy diet.



    LINK BETWEEN STRESS AND BELLY FAT



    You exercise faithfully, doing crunches until you’re exhausted, diet until you can’t stand it anymore and still you hold onto your belly fat. What’s the problem? The problem is that excess abdominal fat can develop from high stress levels. How can stress cause a fat belly?



    Fat in the body’s abdominal area acts in a different manner from the fat elsewhere in the body. It has a larger blood supply as well as more receptors for a stress hormone called cortisol. The levels of cortisol fluctuate throughout the day but a higher amount of the hormone is released during periods of stress and remains elevated.



    The cortisol hones in on the abdominal area because of the large blood supply there, thus encouraging fat to be stored there. Consequently, if you are experiencing stress on a regular basis, your body will continue to deposit fat around your middle.



    Belly fat is not the only cost of a stressful lifestyle caused by work problems, health problems, family problems, etc. High cortisol levels interfere with dopamine and serotonin, leading to depression and feelings of more stress.



    To reduce your stress level, try to incorporate stress relievers into your daily life like reading, taking walks, soaking in the tub, listening to relaxing music, etc. Even if you think you do not have the time, you must make the time in order to be healthier physically and mentally.



    WAYS TO REDUCE BELLY FAT



    EAT A HEALTHY DIET full of fruits and vegetables and foods that are loaded with omega-3 fats like olive oil, fatty fish, nuts and seeds. The omega-3 fats reduce inflammation in the body and the production of adrenaline, another stress hormone, ultimately resulting in less belly fat.



    EXERCISE at least 20 minutes a day, preferably using aerobic movements. To help work your ab area, incorporate activities like cross-country skiing or kickboxing into your exercise routine.



    Be patient. Whittling down that belly fat will take time especially if you have significant fat in that area. Stick to your program, the fat will disappear.



    In summary, if you have a fat belly, your best solution is to follow a healthy diet program, combined with an aerobic and stomach-toning regimen to tighten your abdominal muscles. Make sure you include stress relievers in your daily life, as well, to help keep the belly fat at bay.

    People who lose a significant amount of weight are usually left with piles of loose skin. This sagging skin can affect anyone’s confidence because it can be very unsightly and embarrassing. They can even be as troublesome as the excess weight that the person once carried. If you happen to have shed a large amount of weight and you cannot afford plastic surgery, you could be left with loose skin for the remainder of your life.



    Any amount or type of exercise will never completely eliminate loose skin from your body. Tightening up skin and muscle also has its limits. It will be more difficult to get the skin to go back into place after such a dramatic change in body shape. Eventually your skin will lose its elasticity and it will be harder for it to return back into shape after being stretched.



    Surgery seems to be the only effective way of getting rid of loose skin. The procedure can be lengthy and expensive depending on the area covered. However, there maybe some scars left after the operation. Normally an area of skin is cut in a pear shape or teardrop shape and the excess skin is removed. Then the two ends will be sewn together later and the line where the two pieces of skin meet will become a scar.



    You will have to decide between loose skin and the appearance of scars. It is obviously a tough decision considering the amount of recovery time and the money that would be involved. However, surgery could be worth it, if it would make you feel as though your physical transformation was complete.



    Remember that there is a good chance that there will be a great deal of scarring if you chose to undergo this type of plastic surgery. The areas where the loose skin once was will never look like it did when you were younger. Also keep in mind that a significant weight loss that brings about large amounts of loose skin is traumatic to your body. You have to give your body enough time between the loss of the weight and the surgery on the loose skin. It would be a good idea to rest for a few months to allow the skin to settle before you make any plans for surgery.
