What are some good vegetarian sources of protein?



Being vegetarian does not mean your diet will be lacking in protein. Most plant foods contain protein and in fact it would be very difficult to design a vegetarian diet that is short on protein.

Ironically being overly concerned about good vegetarian sources of protein may not even be that necessary. Why? Well folks, it's been proven that excess dietary protein may lead to health problems.

We all know we need a certain amount of protein everyday to remain healthy. Based on misinformation to this effect, several people view the daily consumption of a high-protein diet as beneficial. But have you really seen any one lose the desired weight on such popular diets as the Atkins Diet, which is basically a low-carbohydrate/high protein lifestyle.

I have seen several people try it and fail, and even became sicker for the process.

Here are some other facts that should spur you in the right direction in regards to excessive protein consumption even from so-called good vegetarian sources of protein : According to the French Hygienist, Albert Mosseri, diseases and conditions which can be caused or aggravated by too much protein intake include: Leukemia, Skin Diseases and even Cancer.

Based on the John Robbins work titled: Diet for a New America, the number of people in the US suffering from diseases caused by protein excess is a mind-boggling 40, 000, 000 compared to a measly 3 people suffering from the deficiency of this substance.

Friends, the need of protein for the human body is about a nickel's weight worth, the excess is basically excreted in urine. Based on research, the need for amino acids is highly exaggerated as only 16% or our body is Protein. Pure protein is primarily Nitrogen (N) with some Oxygen and Hydrogen and Carbon.

We all know that we get a large share of our Oxygen and Hydrogen need from the air. Since we are able to utilize and assimilate a large amount of our needs of these elements, we are able to build the Nitrogen into our body as protein. This process is done by natural bacteria action that is capable of converting it to our use. People who smoke though cannot pick up Nitrogen from the air so easily but might still get enough from proper foods. Although for your well-being, cessation of tobacco usage is mandatory.

Still, all of this information doesn't mean that all of a sudden one should completely exclude protein from his or her diet, just don't be overly concerned about it that's all.

Now for some good vegetarian sources of protein, here are some recommended items.

1. Green Leaves: Believe or not, these babies have sufficient amounts of protein and of extremely high quality, containing all the essential amino acids. They are highly absorbable and will not ferment in the intestines nor poison the body. These greens contain a lot of alkaline minerals, which will also help to assimilate the proteins and may very well be the number 1 vegetarian source of protein.

Oh, the mountain Gorillas of the Central region of Nigeria at times subsists on leaves EXCLUSIVELY during the dry season and need I mention how big they are...and have you ever wondered what the cow lives on? Grass! Now that's saying something ain't it?

2. Fruits:

Some of the fruits containing higher quantities of a vegetarian source of protein are
-Avocados (2.1%)
-Dates (2.%)
-Bananas (1.5%)
-Figs (2%)
-Durians (3%)
-Olives (4%)

3. Nuts
4. Whole Grains
5. Some root vegetables (such as Sweet Potatoes @ 2% by dry weight.)
6. Legumes (though not necessarily advocated...are a good vegetarian source of protein)

So, there you have it, good vegetarian sources of protein that will give you more than enough amino acids for the body-building duties of these substances.
