In our day and age it is very common to refer to medicine in almost any case of discomfort or disease, our society nurtures the feeling that for every physical or mental condition or disorder there is a chemical answer that sets things right, and that the materialism of human nature is once that takes care of itself. The case with depression is different, not saying that depression is not treated by medicine because it has been treated with many different kind of chemical solutions for the last few decades, but there are more ways to fight and beat depression, and many of these ways are not medicine related.



Many of the people who suffer depression in one part of their lives realize that this is a kind of condition that might return and hit them in later stages in life, this understanding makes depression patients seek answers that will have a significant effect throughout a long period of time.     If you suffer from a depression, you should do all you can to avoid it become chronic and take over your life. This include appropriate medication as well as your attitude.     Depression is a very common problem. Almost everyone is depressed sometime in his or her life. It is a serious problem because it robs an individual of the joy of life. In severe cases, it can lead to suicide. The following can be symptoms of depression:



    *Low mood, varying from slight sadness to crippling feelings of being unworthy.



    *Feelings of hopelessness or overwhelming guilt.



    *Thought disorders, including lack of concentration and difficulty making decisions.



    *Loss of interest in work, hobbies, relationships, and/or religion.



    *Feeling slowed down or restless with trouble sitting still.



    *Problems with memory.



    *Sleeping too much (usually) or too little.



    *Low levels of physical and mental energy.



    *Increase or decrease in appetite, weight gain or loss.



    *Withdrawal from family and friends.



    *Thoughts of death or suicide.



    This common mental health challenge has three components: situational, biochemical and behavioral.



    SITUATIONAL:



    It is normal and a sign of mental and emotional health to be depressed when things go wrong. The only question is the level, duration, and cause of the depression. Does the level of depression and the duration seem to be appropriate to the problem?



    Examples of depression that are NORMAL and signs of mental and emotional health:



    *Death of a significant person. This can last a lifetime in some cases. After a period of time, it should not prevent usual activities from continuing.



    *Loss of a significant person. This can be almost as difficult as death, and sometimes worse. The most common situation is the break-up of a relationship. This would also include someone having a serious or fatal illness or a major injury resulting in disability or disfigurement.



    *Major material loss. If your house burns down, you lose your job, you flunk out of school, you get a serious injury or develop a significant medical problem, it is normal to be depressed.



    Examples of depression that are ABNORMAL and signs of mental and/or emotional illness:



    *Crying for years about a pet that died.



    *Unable to continue everyday activities even though the event was more than three months ago.



    *Getting really depressed because you have complexion problems.



    BIOCHEMICAL:



    You were born with a unique nervous system. Everyone has areas of risk in the area of mental and emotional health. Maybe you are more likely than most to get into trouble with drugs or alcohol. Perhaps you are more likely to be seriously depressed. For chronic depression due to biochemical factors, there are very effective medications.



    Women have an additional area of vulnerability. As they get older, their hormone levels decrease and they may have major mental and emotional problems. This can be treated with replacement hormones, which may include small amounts of male hormones that their ovaries previously produced.



    BEHAVIORAL:



    When you get depressed, you act differently. Some of these changes in your behavior can become habits. Unless you actively change these behaviors, they will contribute to the persistence of the depression. When you are trying to get out of a depression, act as if you were not depressed:



    *Sleep no more than eight hours a night.



    *Do not use any drugs or alcohol.



    *Start, or resume, exercising.



    *Eat a healthy and nutritious diet.



    *Get out and do things.



    *Tell yourself and your friends that you are okay again.



    *Listen to your favorite music.



    *Do an activity that you enjoy (sewing, needlepoint, etc.).



    *Smile at every person you meet.



    *Read a book by your favorite author.



    *Write down a list of the things that make you happy and that you are thankful for. (See how many items you can come up with!)



    *Hold your child(ren).



    *Think of the moments in your life that have given you joy.



    This is a very powerful technique. Everyone knows that how you feel determines how you act and that attitude leads to behavior. It is important to realize that it is equally true in the reverse direction. How you act can determine how you feel. Changing your behavior can change your attitude.



    If someone you love is showing signs or symptoms of depression, seek help immediately. There is nothing wrong with reaching out for help and it may save the life of someone you love.

    Do Not Give Up In Managing Your Depression, Anxieties, And Stresses

    Never give up in try to find ways to overcome your depression, anxiety or fears. At times, you may feel overwhelmed and feel that there is nothing else you can do. The fact of the matter is that there are ways in getting rid of your depression and anxieties. Here is a brief list of techniques that you can use to help gain a foothold on your anxieties and fears.



    Try to learn different ways to manage your depression. Get some professional help to learn the best ways to deal with your current problems. Many counselors know the most up to date methods in getting rid of your depression and fears. Take advantage of this. Get the help you need so you can manage your current problems.



    Try to find the real source of your fears and then learn to manage it. In dealing with any kinds of fears or anxieties, you should try to learn the facts of what is causing your anxieties. Knowing why you are feeling anxious will go a long way in managing your anxieties.



    Remember that when we worry, out thoughts become exaggerated with fear and anxiety. Balance these anxious thoughts by thinking of something constructive. Also, challenge those thoughts by asking questions that focuses on reality and common sense.



    A lot of times, our worries can make things even worse. Try to take things as they come. Don’t assume anything. Focus on what is reality and what are the facts of the given situation. Our thoughts may tend to become negative so focus on something constructive if you can.



    When nothing happens the first time around in managing your depression, a person may get frustrated and eventually give up in managing their anxiety. The answers or techniques you are looking for will not always come to you on the first or second try. Only through experience will you learn what works for you. Be patient and continue to learn from your experiences.



    Remember not to quit when the going gets tough. Try to learn as much as you can in dealing with your worries and then put them to use through the guidance of a professional. In time you will feel better.

    Is Depression Always A Medical Problem – Another View

    It is commonly accepted that depression is caused by some medical or emotional problem. Here is a viewpoint that questions this assumption.



    Advertisements for anti-depression drugs are constantly smattered across the tube today. They are accompanied with the possible advantages of taking one drug or another to relieve this common malady. By law such ads are followed with a list of contraindications (possible side effects) some which sound much worse than the depression itself.



    Along with these ads is a little noticed disclaimer or shall we refer to it as a simple honest statement about depression. That statement is that the cause for common depression is not fully known. I use the word common here for an important purpose. Surely some depression is in fact caused by chemical imbalance or emotional shock of some kind. No one could argue that point.



    It is said that up to twenty million Americans have some sort of depression. It seems to be a modern phenomenon in our history as a nation. There are few records of this malady prior to the early twentieth century. Depression prior to the modern era was often referred to as melancholy. Abraham Lincoln was said to suffer deep bouts of melancholy that were offset with times of joviality and levity. Perhaps a change in his attitude was his own way of making adjustments or a behavioral self medication of sorts.



    Few studies conducted on depression include a side by side comparison with other countries or cultures. Some countries have virtually no sizable number of reported cases of depression. Often these are the poorest countries in the world. A lot could be deduced from this about how much money; affluence and materialism have to do with making Americans happy and well balanced.



    In thirty five years of studying the Bible I have never heard one preacher or theologian worth his salt ever approach the causes for depression based on a biblical view. Not only does the Bible explain the cause of depression but it provides a complete answer to it as well. No, it is not a miracle or a divine healing it is simply a profound change in a life that pushes the depression out sometimes instantly and in some cases more slowly. First let’s look at the cause for most general depression in people according to the Bible.



    Contrary to the general consensus God doesn’t just wink at unbelief but he is actively engaged in convicting the unbeliever to answer his call to salvation. His dogged pursuit is fired not just by the fact that they are sinners but because he loves every human being that is born in a way that is beyond our imagination. God is trying to love people into his kingdom not drag them into it. To do this he has to make them fully aware of their separation from him. It is a present pressure applied by God’s Holy Spirit.



    Jesus spoke of this matter and he said in no uncertain terms that it is one of the Holy Spirit’s primary works while he is in the world. He said in John’s gospel “Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove (convict) the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.” Jn. 16:7, 8.



    Believers often say they came under the conviction of the Holy Spirit and that is what finally brought them to pray and accept the salvation God is offering. Unbelievers say they’re depressed, moody or in some inexplicable state of mind. That the conviction described by the believer and the depression felt by the unbeliever is one and the same thing is verified by the countless millions over the centuries that ceased to experience the depression soon after they yielded to God. I have seen this result countless times in the past more than three decades. This first hand experience and the scriptural support have convinced me beyond doubt that millions of people are suffering needlessly.



    I would never advise anyone not to see their doctor for a complete examination of their depression. If it does happen to be a chemical imbalance or related to an emotional experience then the question is answered. If this does not answer the question then seeking God for his salvation should be the next move in their lives. In fact it should be the first move in their lives.



    Speaking for myself I think living apart from Jesus’ love and having no certain hope of the future would indeed be very depressing. I’m glad I answered that question many years ago.
