Dealing with Depression? Don't Give Fear the Upper Hand

Dealing with Depression? Don't Give Fear the Upper Hand

What do you do when your fears and depression are stronger than what you can bear? There are times that no matter what you do, your fears have the best of you. However, one has to make every effort to control them. Hard as that may be, it can be done. Here are some suggestions.

1. Take things “One Day at a Time”:

2. Dwell on the Positive Things in Your Life

3. If you are Spiritual or of a Religious Upbringing, pray.

4. Engage in Some Sort of Physical Exercise

Now it may not be easy when dealing with depression to be able to implement these suggestions, heck I find myself having to push myself to do as much some times, however, I will say that coupled with fasting and positive thinking, when dealing depression and its inevitable burdens, applying the steps above do help.

Thankfully, most of the time, I seem to have something to look forward to so it's safe to say I don't get as depressed as I used to be.

    Postpartum Depression,” or “PPD,”

    Postpartum Depression,” or “PPD,”

    By Arthur Buchanan

    What is PPD?

Clinicians and researchers use the term “postpartum depression,” or “PPD,” to refer to non-psychotic depression that occurs shortly after childbirth.

Does it differ from other depressions?

Apart from the fact that it happens soon after childbirth, Postpartum Depression is clinically no different from a depressive episode that occurs at any other time in a woman’s life. The symptoms are the same as in general depression, and must meet the same criteria for diagnosis. However, not surprisingly, the content of the symptoms of Postpartum Depression often focuses on motherhood or infant care topics.

    What causes Postpartum Depression?

Although health professionals do not know what causes depression (and therefore PPD), they accept that there is no single cause. Physical, hormonal, social, psychological and emotional factors may all play a part in triggering the illness. This is known as the biopsychosocial model of depression, and is accepted by most researchers and clinicians. The factor or group of factors that trigger Postpartum Depression vary from one individual to the other.

    How common is Postpartum Depression?

PPD is the most common complication of child-bearing. Although the rates given in individual studies vary greatly, a meta-analysis of 59 studies of more than 12,000 women found that Postpartum Depression affects an average of 13 per cent of women (O’Hara & Swain, 1996).

    When does Postpartum Depression start?

The time period used to define “postpartum” varies, from immediately following childbirth to four weeks (according to formal diagnostic classification systems) after childbirth or up to a year, according to some research studies. Symptoms usually begin within the first four weeks postpartum, although they can start up to 12 months afterwards. However, service providers may not detect and treat PPD until much later. Often, questioning will reveal that the symptoms actually began much earlier than the woman had disclosed to a health care provider.

How do clinicians diagnose Postpartum Depression?

A physician or licensed psychologist makes a formal diagnosis of depression. Professionals use numerous methods to elicit the information needed to make a diagnosis, including standardized clinical interviews. The clinician’s judgment is essential in deciding whether or not an individual’s symptoms meet diagnostic criteria, in terms of severity or duration of symptoms. The formal classification system used in North America is the American Psychiatric Association (APA) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth edition, or DSM-IV (American Psychiatric Association, 1994).

To indicate an episode of Postpartum Depression using DSM-IV criteria, the physician or psychologist would indicate that it is an episode of major depressive disorder with the specifier “postpartum onset” (which means that the symptoms occurred within four weeks of the woman’s having given birth).

Individuals must have exhibited either a depressed mood or a loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities (called anhedonia) continually, for a minimum of two weeks. In addition, they must have experienced other symptoms from a given list of seven, for a minimum of two weeks.

A clinician will diagnose major depression if the individual has a low mood or anhedonia, plus four other symptoms (for a minimum of five symptoms). People with a low mood or anhedonia with fewer than four symptoms will receive a diagnosis of minor or moderate depression.

How can service providers rule out other causes?

It is imperative that the symptoms displayed a) represent a change from the individual’s normal functioning and b) cause impairment in everyday life. Through referral to the family doctor or another physician, as appropriate, providers should rule out other medical conditions that may cause similar symptoms and may be common in the postpartum period (e.g., thyroid dysfunction, diabetes, anemia, autoimmune diseases).

How long does Postpartum Depression last?

The length of an episode varies from a number of weeks to a number of months. Some women say it can take up to a year for them to feel back to their normal selves. In a small number of cases, the episode may not remit and the women experience chronic episodes of depression.

Will Postpartum Depression come back again?

Experiencing an episode of depression, at any time in life, increases the likelihood of experiencing further episodes. Research suggests that the minimum risk of experiencing a non–childbirth-related episode of illness is 25 per cent (Wisner et al., 2001) and the risk of having another postpartum episode may be as high as 40 per cent, with approximately 24 per cent of all recurrences occurring within the first two weeks postpartum (Wisner et al., 2004).

Dealing With Depression: How You Can Learn To Treat Depression

Dealing With Depression: How You Can Learn To Treat Depression

    By John Maxford

When a person undertakes a course of therapy through their doctor, and there is no improvement, they may be suffering from a treatment resistant depression.

This is difficult, and takes time to diagnose, since by its nature, depression is not an illness that can be cured with a ten-day course of drugs, like an infection.

Depending on the physician's assessment, a patient may start out on a mild tricyclic drug, which can be replaced with something that has better results for more involved cases. They may also recommend concurrent counseling with a psychologist or psychiatrist, to work on the underlying issues that have caused the illness.

Some conditions, like post partum depression, and bi-polar disorders are chemically related, and even multiple changes of medication may not do enough to break through the cycle of dark moods and thoughts. In that event, the next recommendation may be for a stay in a treatment facility for depression.

Treatment resistant depression can be better addressed in an environment where a patient is closely monitored for both behavioral and mood changes, and possibly for blood tests to assess the therapeutic level of a drug in their system.

The secure surroundings of a treatment facility for depression, are often reassuring to patients who are highly strung, nervous and anxious. With counseling, and other therapies, people suffering from post partum depression or other depressive disorders, have a chance to get back on an even keel, so that they can actively participate in their own recovery.

While there is such a thing as treatment resistant depression, there are also answers to that resistance, and consultation with your doctor, will help you find them.

Depression Symptoms: Is This Depression Or Am I Just Sad?

Is This Depression Or Am I Just Sad?

    By Foras Aje

Do you know the difference between being depressed or just being sad?

Most people don’t. However, this matters because perhaps the best way to avoid health complications arising from depression is to deal with it in its early stages.

It is normal to feel sad from time to time. Sadness is a natural reaction to something upsetting which has happened. Depression on the other hand is more extreme. It is more of an emotional or mental illness which has a lot more symptoms than sadness and can, if not treated lead to suicide.

One huge difference between sadness and depression is that a person experiencing feelings which they find disconcerting can reasonably tell you what it is that is causing their unhappiness, however a person suffering from depression may not necessarily be able to do so.

When one is sad, we tend to know that things will get better over time; on the other hand, a person going through depression may not see an end to his or her problem and may consequently think things are or will get worse.

This may lead to a depression that could last for a long length of time. With the negative feelings being so intense and overpowering, depression is oft times something one just can’t snap out of, at least not without assistance or taking exact measures to match or overwhelm its hold on a person.

Though it is safe to say anyone going through depression experiences sadness, but not every sad person is necessarily depressed, both emotional hindrances might need to be addressed and catered to the same or very similar ways.

However, since depression is usually more burdensome than just a state of sadness, one needs to be able to distinguish between the two to determine the amount of effort that may need to be done to correct either state of these negative emotions.

In order to be able to attack depression-advisably in its earlier stages-below are its symptoms in no specific order.

    1. Irritability and mood swings.

    2. Hopelessness and extreme pessimism (a negative outlook on life)

    3. Loss of energy, extreme fatigue and tiredness.

    4. Loss of interest in hobbies, having a good appearance and even associates and loved ones.

    5. Extreme feelings of helplessness and no self worth.

    6. Suicidal thoughts (in extreme cases)

    7. Insomnia (lack of) or excessive sleep.

    8. Inexplicable weight loss or gain thereof, triggered by eating disorders.

Though not a conclusive list as characteristics vary by patient, these symptoms of depression listed above are the most common ones.

If you happen to experience any of these symptoms, the first step, in my opinion and based on research will be to look within and ask why this may be occurring. Thoroughly assess your situation to see what it is that could be triggering these symptoms of depression within you. Could it be a failure at something or the loss of something or someone of importance?

If you go over the problem carefully, you would be able to target the cause and consequently solve it. Remember, the mind is the most powerful force on the earth, He who can control it can control all things my friend.

I will also mention that for both sadness (a symptom of depression obviously) and for the emotional disorder-depression-which we have now characterized for the purposes of distinguishing between the two, some steps you can take on your own for help will be engaging in some form of physical activity such as exercise or other hobbies.

This step exercises the motor centers of the brain, making the blood flow away from the emotional activity center; consequently one becomes more receptive to positive thoughts.

In addition to this tip, an observance of nature will show us that when animals are frightened or angered, they abstain from eating until after the passage of some time. Moreover, it is true that under stressful circumstances many civilized people refrain from eating and find in truth that they lack the desire for food, but it is also too often that most of us will eat large meals under these circumstances.

Now, worry, fear, anxiety, excitement, hurry, heated arguments at meals: all prevent the secretion of the digestive enzymes of the body and hinder not only digestion, but the whole nutrition process.

This considered, perhaps the last thing you may want to do while dealing with depression or sadness-be it its causes or symptoms is to eat excessively, I may go as far as to say to even eat at all.

It is also advised that at this crucial stage of emotional encumbrance, try and seek out the company of uplifting friends, relatives and associates. As much as possible, purposely surround yourself with uplifting and positive elements like your favorite DVD comedies, books, sitcoms and things of that nature.

So if you are unsure if you are truly depressed or just sad, take heart, neither of these negative emotions can overpower you-if you take charge and overcome them. It may not always be easy and you may need help, however, the desire to be-little their effects over you will be the first step towards success.

    In Friendship,

    Foras Aje

Depression Treatment From A Spiritual Perspective

Depression Treatment From A Spiritual Perspective

    By Friedrich Asen

This article about the intense subject of depression anticipates two ways of reaction. The question is: Will it be – in your case - shock or relief?

When you read about depression, you will encounter many passages like the following:

“These brain chemicals—in varying amounts—are responsible for our emotional state. Depression happens, when these chemical messages aren’t delivered correctly between brain cells, disrupting communication.”

What could be probably wrong with that statement?

It is based on the unquestioned belief that human beings are machines. Although this assumption is widespread, it is simply not a fact. Machines are built, operated and cared for by conscious human beings. In an analogous way our body and mind exist because of our existence as conscious beings.

It is not matter, which builds consciousness, but it is consciousness, which forms matter. That is actually our observation everywhere.

The matter of depression must be totally reevaluated from this new perspective. It is not a fact that brain chemicals are responsible for our emotional state, but vice versa. Our emotional state leads to the production of certain chemicals in our brain and body.

Of course there is an interlink between the two planes. Emotional states can definitely be influenced by certain chemical substances. But there is some substantial loss of information, as the “positive” state induced by chemicals cannot be compared with a natural positive state derived from the firm foundation in the conviction that life is wonderful.

Here we have arrived at a crucial point.

Depression is not caused by chemicals in the brain, but rather causes chemicals in the brain. Depression is a state of mind, wherein the affected human being has lost his/her connection to the original quality of life, which is bliss, knowledge and eternity.

Neither will medication help to overcome depression, nor superficial psychological treatment. The only way to help the depression sufferer is by unalloyed love, which is rare in this world. This sort of love will not further push him into the state of a helpless and powerless victim, but will empower him to take his fate into his own hands.

In this way the person suffering with depression will be given the chance to see live from a new perspective. He will learn to love himself despite of any shortcomings, because – by feeling appreciated and loved – he will come to love his real spiritual personality, which is always beyond the polarity of material despair and happiness. When he finds shelter in the ultimate quality of pure consciousness, which is unconditional love, he will feel the natural bliss of life.

Consequently this article ends with a request to doctors and psychologists: Become unconditional lovers! All other cures are temporary, like shifting a hurting heavy weight from one shoulder to the other. If you want to solve the root problem, you have to solve it first and foremost in yourself.

Natural Treatment For Depression – It Is Possible!

    By Dr. Isaac Schumann

Depression is one of the most common psychological and emotional problems American adults encounter. A study reports that about 13 to 20 percent of American adults have some form of depressive symptoms. Unfortunately, many severe cases of depression can ultimately lead to suicide.

Are there any solutions and treatments available to stem this unfortunate tide? Fortunately, the answer to this is yes. Unfortunately again, many of these treatments involves a soup of medicines that may have some form or side effect. As we discussed previously psychotherapy is another solution that is gaining popularity due to the favorable results they have exhibited.

For some people, the question that remains is if there are any “natural” depression treatments available that do not involve some cocktail of hard-to-spell medications that can be taken as a preventive and beneficial alternative to mainstream treatments. The answer is yes. Although it is recommended that any form of depression should be consulted with a doctor let’s take a look at a list of natural supplements that may help alleviate symptoms of depression.

It Starts with the Diet Depression can be treated with better nutrition. Studies have shown that such treatment not only has a beneficial effect on the person’s physical health, but also a favorable effect on the person’s mental and emotional health. This nutritional treatment includes modification of diet, vitamins and minerals, and the addition of some amino acid supplements.

The amino acid supplements are essential elements that are precursors to neurotransmitters. The amino acids D, L-pheylalanine and L-tyrosine are a viable alternative to antidepressant drugs.

A deficiency in vitamins and minerals in the body can also cause depression. If this condition is corrected, depression owing to this cause can be alleviated. Even if you are not sure if you lack vitamins and minerals, supplementing your diet with them will often improve symptoms related to depression and will contribute to better overall health.

Some Very Useful Herbs The herb St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) in an extracted standardized form is being used in Germany and other European countries to treat depression in its mild and moderate forms. It is also known to alleviate anxiety and sleep disorders.

This herb claims many benefits – among them are its anti-depressive and antiviral properties.

The Ginkgo (Ginkgo Biloba) extract, while not a primary treatment for major cases of depression, is an excellent supplement to any depression-related syndrome. Studies are beginning to show that Ginkgo can be used to treat some forms of depression that are not responsive to antidepressant agents. In cases of resistant depression, Ginkgo Biloba is beginning to appear attractive to the medical world.

Cut Back on Those Soft Drinks Many practitioners advocate a nutrition oriented approach to treating depression. They believe that the answer to the depression question can be found in the diet of a person. Studies show that a decrease in the intake of sugars and refined carbohydrates can produce relief from symptoms of depression.

This diet will entail cutting out sugary drinks, pasta, white bread, and other processed foods. For your carbohydrate needs, it would be better to stick to grains, whole wheat, and other natural plant based carbohydrates. Also, cutting down on these kinds of food can do wonders for one’s overall health.

This treatment is recommended for those who feel depressed and languid during the late hours of the morning and the afternoon. For these people, eating sugary foods will induce a temporary feeling of alleviation from depression. However, this is only for a few minutes, and the body automatically reverts to languid depression.

Depression is one serious disorder that should not be taken for granted. Some people will equate depression with other natural feelings such as anger, happiness, and sadness. However, depression is much more complicated than that. It is a disorder and an ailment that can be treated by natural or medical means. It would do well to consult your doctor for more information on dealing with depression.
