At times it may be hard to distinguish if one is just sad or blue, or if one is suffering from a medical condition. It's at times like this that one needs to know what the real signs and symptoms of anxiety and depression are in order to decipher what the scenario is.

The signs and symptoms of anxiety and depression can overtake someone like waves on a storm tossed sea. If you feel that you are swimming against the tide, if worry, confusion, and hopelessness are getting the best of you, this may be a warning that it is time to take stock of your emotional health.

Unlike the blues, depression is not something you can just snap out of; it is not a sign of personal weakness or a failure to bear up under the pressures of life.
In reality, the signs symptoms of depression and anxiety have a tendency to last for quite a while. Perhaps that is one distinguishing factor.

In order to not allow depression to take over your present situation and consequently hinder you from overcoming it, below are its symptoms in no specific order.

1. Irritability and mood swings.
2. Hopelessness and extreme pessimism (a negative outlook on life)
3. Loss of energy, extreme fatigue and tiredness.
4. Loss of interest in hobbies, having a good appearance and even associates and loved ones.
5. Extreme feelings of helplessness and no self worth.
6. Suicidal thoughts (in extreme cases)
7. Insomnia (lack of) or excessive sleep.
8. Inexplicable weight loss or gain thereof, triggered by eating disorders.

On the other hand, Anxiety may reach a point where constant worry or obsessional thoughts can be difficult to control. Shakiness, sweating, palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath—all of these can be signs of this disorder.

Signs and symptoms of anxiety and depression can “share the same house,” so to speak, with additional symptoms thrown into the mix: muscle tension, difficulty concentrating, restlessness, irritability, sleep disturbances, appetite changes, headaches, no energy, fatigue or exhaustion, feeling sad, loss of interest in activities formerly enjoyed, restlessness, or suicidal thoughts.

Though not a conclusive list as characteristics vary by patient, these signs and symptoms of anxiety and depression listed above are the most common ones. If you happen to experience any of these symptoms, the first step, in my opinion and based on research will be to look within and ask why this may be occurring. Thoroughly assess your situation to see what it is that could be triggering these symptoms of depression within you. Could it be a failure at something or the loss of something or someone of importance?

Thankfully, when promptly addressed and dealt with, the indicating factor of such signs and symptoms of anxiety and depression can be curtailed with adequate action.
