Learn All About Save Marriage Counseling Techniques

How to choose the right counselor to save your marriage

People who usually turn to therapy are those who realize they are in trouble and are looking for save marriage counseling solutions. Most marital therapists are trained to be neutral and nondirective. It is a view that some specialists do not accept. They consider that for therapy to be successful, the couple needs to start considering their therapist just as someone they can talk to, and take him or her as the person who can coach them out of the problems that are destroying their marriage.

The largest part of the failure resulting from unsuccessful save marriage counseling is explained by these non-directive methods used by counselors. The scientists encourage the couples to look for those counselors that clearly set the goals of their therapy sessions.
A good counselor helps you overcome powerful emotional trauma associated with marriage unhappiness. The husband and wife need to have their priorities established, they need a plan to try to complete.

Save marriage counseling is all the more successful if you don’t rush into the first counseling center, but talk to several counselors to learn as much as you can on your therapist’s training and therapy orientation. Here are some issues that you need to make clear with a counselor before taking any save marriage counseling sessions. The therapist should explain his or her background in therapy work as well as the kind of education she or he got.

An important issue before save marriage counseling is to find out whether the person you turned to has more experience in marriage salvaging or in helping people getting over divorce. You may also choose someone different if you hear that the counselor you went to doesn’t believe in divorce. An even more delicate problem is when one partner wants to end marriage and the other to save it. The save marriage counseling in this case should not just help each of the partners solve their problems, but focus on couple issues.

Save marriage counseling needs to be carefully treated as so much depends on the type of therapy you’re getting. By this I mean that the salvage of your marriage is a responsibility shared between counselor and life partners. Go to a marriage counselor who has experience in marriage salvaging and a high percentage of couples who have solved their problems after taking his or her services.

At Odds With Your Partner? Here Is How To Understand Each Other.

One of the greatest difficulties of being a human is that we never can see within the heart, mind, and experience of another person. This is especially problematic in marriage where, based on years of experience, we think we know our partner. We usually are only partly right about what our partner is experiencing. That is why it is so important to draw out your partner‘s point of view. A good listener has a big advantage in marriage.

When partners share feelings, ideas, and beliefs, our responsibility is to be attentive, respectful, and accepting. You demonstrate sensitivity by listening attentively in order to understand your partner’s frame of reference. The skill of empathy helps us do this. To be empathic is to listen and observe attentively, not only to hear the words that your partner expresses, but also to understand the feelings expressed. It’s important to focus on nonverbal clues, such as tone of voice and gestures. By listening empathically, you are able to identify with your partner’s perceptions, thoughts, and feelings.

Your nonverbal and verbal behaviors assure your partner that you want to understand the message. Maintaining eye contact, focusing on what is being said, and giving feedback regarding your understanding of the message, communicate caring and acceptance.
Empathy allows us to enter our partner’s perceptual world and to spontaneously feel what our partner feels. Empathy may not result in agreement, but it allows us to demonstrate understanding. If we are empathic, our partner is more likely to reveal feelings and perceptions. Sharing our deepest feelings enriches our relationship.

Observing yourself in these situations will help you measure your empathy.
This exercise will give you practice in behaving empathically:
    • Identify an issue or an area that is difficult for you to discuss with your partner.
    • Examine the issue from your partner’s frame of reference. Can you identify the attitudes, feelings, and values that your partner holds regarding the issue?
    • Discuss the issue from your partner’s point of view for 3-5 minutes.
    • What was it like to feel or think like your partner?
    • Now reverse roles and examine the issue from your own point of view. What are your feelings and beliefs regarding the issue?
    • Discuss the issue from your own point of view for 3-5 minutes.
    • Evaluate how the role reversal helped you.

Through expressing and listening to words and feelings, you and your partner can grow to know each other more intimately.

Everyone Expects The Best Anniversay Gift

Everyone has been in the same position the wedding anniversary comes out of know where and the rushing around to get a gift is inconvenient.

Many anniversary occasions need to be equal to the wedding celebration for some people. When you have an anniversary is many years after the wedding it acknowledges that the commitment between the couples have made it through the test of time. Trying to figure out what your spouse wants is sometimes difficult so leave hints or let them know what you would like.

The anniversary gift shows that you are loving, loyal and sincere and you have hope for a future. Whether you have been dating for one year or married for 50 years, an anniversary gift is the perfect way to show your love and appreciation. Nice wines or gift baskets containing the things they love make a great gift.

All couples love to celebrate anniversaries, when together year after year it shows that they love each other and the bond between them will last and last. When reaching the 50th wedding anniversary is it a definite milestone, not many couples reach this fabulous time and since so many do not reach this level it is a great time to acknowledge the couples hard work and honor them for the love they were able to keep for each other over the years.

A traditional wedding anniversary gift varies annually. Throughout the years, these traditional gives can be kept as mementos or family heirlooms. For example, the traditional gift for the first anniversary is paper, the second year is cotton, and the third is leather and so on. When thinking about a traditional anniversary gift it is a good plan to make a list of item that will help and benefit to the couple.

There are now stores that offer flowers made of cotton, wood, tin or lace. When you send flowers to some one you remind them that they are precious to you and that you slove them. Flowers are very easy to find and it is a gift that brings a natural smile to anyone’s face.

The symbol of the sixth anniversary is sweet candy, even though at this time the year the symbol associated is wood. The sixth year is a great time to give candy as an anniversary gift because it will symbolize and ensure the sweetness of the marriage of the seven year itch. When giving presents to your spouse, and the occasion is the wedding anniversary the details of the gift and what you put into it is more important and meaningful and becomes as valuable as lets say a diamond.

Gifts can be anything from golden vase, jewelry, frames, cups, and other types of trinkets. When buying a gift it doesn’t need to gold, taking a gift and wrapping it in gold paper it just as nice. While it’s important to find an anniversary gift that will pay homage to your past memories as well as capture your new memories, you might want to stick to the traditional gifts such as silver when the couple reaches the 25th anniversary or gold for the 50th.

    Married For A Hundred Years?

Someday the cover of Time magazine will have a picture of the first couple to be married 100 years. Reporters will flock to them to ask their secret. But you don’t have to wait to learn their secret. Research has already given us a good idea of what helps marriages last.

By the way the current record, according to the Guinnes Book of World Records is 86 years and is held by two couples. One was a Maine couple who were both born in 1725 and married from 1743 until the wife died. The other was an Indian couple who married when both were five years old and were married until the husband died in 1940.

While much of the literature on marriage is just opinion, there is one researcher whose work is outstanding–psychologist John Gottman, Ph.D. For over three decades Gottman has carefully observed, videotaped, and studied social and physiological responses (e.g. heart rate) of more than 2,000 of couples. His research has found several principles that distinguish marriages that work. After all, marriages may be made in heaven, but a lot of the details have to be worked out on earth.

One principle is that successful couples know a lot about each other. For example, do you know your spouse’s (or paramour’s) favorite movie, book, flower, dessert, or perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon? If not, ask. Another principle is that they have fond memories about their relationship. Every marriage has its difficult times and challenges. In successful marriages, people savor and fondly remember the good times and let the bad memories wither or see the humor in them.

Another principle is that the couples have at least five times as many positive interactions as negative interactions. This is simple conditioning and common sense. If many of the interactions were negative, who would want to stay in the marriage? Yet another principle is that couples have fond feeling for each other, admire each other, and let their partners influence them. Have you told your partner lately how much you admire him or her?

One of the most interesting contemporary marriages is James Carville and Mary Matalin’s marriage. He was President Clinton’s campaign manager and is a frequent television commentator. She was deputy campaign manager for George Bush Sr. and has her own television and radio program. They have coauthored a book and a baby. Do they have nothing in common because they are passionate spokespeople for opposing parties, or do they have a lot in common because of their passion for politics? Whether couples have much in common has more to do with what they perceive than objective measures. Couples who stay together look for commonalities and respect and tolerate differences.

Each of these is in your control. If you don’t believe me, ask your spouse if you could do better. If you are going to stay married, it is certainly worth making your marriage an enjoyable and rewarding marriage. As Gottman put it, “A romantic night out really turns up the heat only when a couple has kept the pilot light burning by staying in touch in the little ways.” Gottman’s books can be very helpful and would be good to read and discuss with your spouse. His books include: Why Marriages Succeed or Fail and The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work. Gottman’s and other marital principles are also covered in the chapter on marriage in Defy Aging.

Unfortunately, most Americans don’t place a high enough priority on our marriages and martial skills to make a marriage last even a few decades. And even if we do, we may have to deal with a spouse dying. Consequently, we need to become very skilled at beginning and ending relationships. If every time a relationship doesn’t work out our lives sound like a country and western song, we will wear ourselves out. Rather we want to be able to say something like: I’m glad we had the relationship. We both grew a lot and learned a lot and became better persons. I hope we can remain friends. What do I need to do now?

Benjamin Franklin’s advice to a person starting a new relationship would be, “Keep your eyes wide open before marriage, half shut afterward.”

One Way To Handle Second Marriages

While all of us hope to find that one special person in our lives, what do we do when that person is taken away from us unexpectedly? For some lucky people, they end up finding a second special person. One of those lucky people is Kimberly Roads, a member of the grammy-nominated country band Little Big Town.

    After disaster…
On November 28, 2006, she married her long-time friend, Stephen Schlapman after her first husband died from a sudden heart attack last year. He was only in his forties, so his death came as a shock to everyone but with Stephen's help not only was Kimberly able to get through her tragic loss but her band went on to have its best year ever. Their album The Road to Here just went gold and two of their singles had been in the Top 10.

    The Second Time around
So how does a recently widowed country singer tie the knot the second time around? Well, Kimberly and Stephen headed to a private Caribbean island with their friends, family, and the other members of Little Big Town to exchange their vows. In fact, the ceremony we so secret news of their marriage didn't even hit the press for another nine days.

That brings us to a topic that more and more couples are facing: what are the rules for a second wedding? While Kimberly and Stephen kept things small and private with a destination wedding, there's no rule that says second weddings have to be that way. But if you want to stay true to those traditional wedding etiquette ideas, then there are some definite guidelines.

Ok What do you do second time around?
For example, brides who have been married before are not supposed to wear white to the wedding. Traditionally, the white dress represented the bride's virginity so the symbolism would be lost on a bride who had been married before. Of course, you might argue that a lot of brides going down the aisle don't deserve to wear white in that case.

Also, most etiquette books say second weddings should be small affairs. If you've already had a huge wedding, then there's no reason to do it all over again. While Kimberly and Stephen seem to reflect that tradition, other celebrity couples – particularly Tom Cruise (who was married to Nicole Kidman for 11 years and Mimi Rogers for 3 years) and Katie Holmes – go all out the second and subsequent times regardless of the etiquette rules.

Another big question is whether or not to invite your ex-spouse to attend the ceremony. The answer is it all depends on your relationship and on how your spouse-to-be feels about it. Some divorced couples do manage to stay friends afterward, particularly if there are children involved, and it's completely acceptable for them to receive an invitation. However, if the two of you had a rocky break-up and/or your new partner isn't too fond of your ex-, then you might be better off just giving him or her the head's up over the phone and skipping the invitation.

The bottom line is that whether you're on your first or second marriage the important thing is to choose a wedding ceremony that makes the two of you happy, regardless of what the rules of etiquette say.
