Asthma In Kids: An Increasing Epidemic

Many believe that the majority of asthma cases are confined to adults, but this is definitely an incorrect assumption. because asthma in kids has become increasingly common in the last 20 years. We are uncertain as to why this is so, but it is an undoubted fact that in the United States alone there are 5,000,000+ children beneath the age of 18 who suffer from asthmic symptoms.

In a recent study (2004) it was discovered that the #1 cause of absenteeism in school is asthma, accounting for a whopping 14,000,000 lost days in school. According to the American Lung Association, four million kids below the age of 18 had an asthma attack during this year.

Anyone, at any age, can manifest asthmatic symptoms - even infants - but most often symptoms manifest themselves around the young age of five.

Who Is Most Vulnerable To An Asthma Attack?

1. Boys are more likely than girls to be sick in earlier childhood

2. Children of African American descent are more vulnerable than Caucasians, Hispanics or Asians

3. And, not surprisingly, children in our increasingly polluted cities are more vulnerable than kids in the less-crowded suburbs and rural areas

Symptoms Of Childhood Asthma

Childhood asthma is like adult asthma in that the symptoms are generally the same:

* Inflammation in the airways
* Coughing
* Difficulty in breathing
* Wheezing
* Rapid breathing
* Shortness of breath
* Symptoms that worsen at night
* Tightness in the chest

There is a special problem with childhood asthma that doesn't apply to adults and that is that children are much less inclined to take care of themselves and thus the parental role is critical. Some kids are simply too young to assume this responsibility while those who are older may have various reasons for neglecting the necessary treatment. For instance, they may dislike being seen as "different" from their classmates or they may be too busy with sports and other activities to monitor their breathing. Thus, an asthma attack that could have been avoided, or at least reduced in severity, is allowed to emerge.

Parents must ensure that:

1. Their child understands and is educated about their asthmatic condition

2. Medications are ingested on a medical schedule

3. And mom and dad can do much to reassure the child so that he doesn't become panicked and afraid, thus worsening his condition.

Without monitoring, childhood asthma may seriously affect a child's general health in a very negative way, possibly even resulting in hospitalization. Asthma in kids must be taken seriously!

    Acupuncture For Migraine And Sinus Headaches

    If you suffer from headaches – whether they be migraine or sinus headaches – you might automatically think of popping a pill. But for a more natural remedy -- and one that’s gaining momentum all the time -- think about acupuncture for sinus headache migrains.

    The thought of acupuncture makes many people cringe. But the art and craft of acupuncture is gaining popularity among people who don’t want to take pain pills or other drugs, but who are looking for natural, pure remedies.

    Simply put, acupuncture is the delicate insertion of very thin needles at various points on the body to relieve pain or promote healing. Relief of sinus, tension and migraine headaches is a common impetus for acupuncture treatment, but it’s used for a variety of other needs, including healing after injury, relief from the pain and discomfort of chemotherapy, and a variety of other ailments and illnesses.

    It’s believed that inserting the needles at specific points in the body realigns the body’s electrical fields which helps to relieve pain or promote the healing necessary for recovery from injury or disease.

    As for headaches, the use of acupuncture is gaining in popularity thanks both to the acceptance the practice is gaining in traditional circles, and reports that the practice is effective in relieving headache pain.

    A recent study showed that the use of acupuncture was effective in relieving the pain of migraine headaches but experts aren’t exactly sure why. They say it’s possible acupuncture has a “placebo” effect, where the patient believes the treatment will help and so it does, without much medical basis for the benefit or relief.

    Others say acupuncture works for migraine and sinus headaches because the acupuncture needles are inserted specifically to re-channel the body’s energy fields and produce a biochemical change in the body’s blood serum.

    If you suffer from sinus or migraine headaches, you know that pain relief in the form of a pill can work. But after four or six hours, the pain returns and you return to the medicine cabinet for another “hit” of the pain-relieving drug. Experts say that the use of acupuncture reduces your dependence on pain-relief drugs, whether they are addictive or not. Over time such drugs can cause liver or kidney damage, or ulcers. If you need medication from your doctor, the drugs can become addictive as well.

    If you have long suffered from sinus or migraine headaches you might have turned to the use of steroid injections for relief. But these can very painful (unlike acupuncture, which most users report is painless) and if used for a long period of time can cause life-threatening side effects.

    Asthma: The Effect Of Diet On Your Breathing Health

    The key point to remember here is that everything you eat will make you breathe more deeply. Some foods will make you breathe more than other foods. Plus there is some individual variation in how much people respond do different foods.

    With this issue please realize that you will need to eat something to stay alive. As all foods increase your breathing depth [because of the digestive process], your breathing is going to be affected, there is no avoiding it. The strategy is simply when your breathing is poor, and you are having symptoms, eat as little as possible and eat the foods that have least effect on your breathing.

    Remember that the problem is to do with your breathing, that is where the most important focus of your recovery should be. It is your shallow breathing practice that is more important than anything else, including diet.

    The foods which tend to increase breathing the most are animal proteins, animal fats and refined sugars. This includes chicken, beef and other meats, and milk products. Plant proteins and fats are less harmful. Nuts, beans, berries and other fruits can have strong impact on some individuals breathing.

    The rule is to reduce animal protein as much as possible, and observe your breathing after eating. Always reduce your breathing after food to reduce the impact of the food. Once your breathing has been conditioned to maintain a higher CO2 level, you will be less affected by what you eat.

    Until then, minimise or stop your meat intake, along with all dairy foods. [Note: Soy milk is very high in protein, and only slightly less harmful than animal milk in breathing terms.]

    Another notable food that increases your breathing very strongly is alcohol. If you have symptoms of asthma do not drink alcohol. If you doubt this, simply measure your pause before a few drinks, then measure it afterwards.

    Major Rule of Food

    If you are not hungry, do not eat. If you do not feel hunger, your body is not ready for food, and will not digest it efficiently. If you are not sure if your are hungry, wait for a while.

    During the first week of training your breathing, especially if you have symptoms, follow this rule rigidly. If you do not eat for several days, fine. Wait until you are hungry.

    The less you eat, the faster your breathing will improve.

    How To Treat Your Allergies Naturally

    The most effective, least expensive, and healthiest treatment for allergies is always avoidance, yet many people will choose medications and vaccinations, despite their dangers and drawbacks. There are many methods to help with avoidance. Using any of these methods is helpful in treating your allergies.

    If you think you must strip your house down to bare floors, bare walls, and plastic covers on your furniture, you are wrong. For instance, if you have asthma or allergic reactions to molds or dust mites, there are some simple measures you can take. Keep your home at a consistent cool temperature between 68 and 72 degrees and keep humidity at a minimum. Always make certain there is good ventilation.

    Since people spend one-third of their lives in their bedroom, it is a good idea to place the most emphasis on decreasing the possibility of dust in the bedroom. The best way to do this is to wash your bedding in water that is at least 130 degrees to completely kill the dust mites found there. (Make sure you choose bedding that can withstand the harshness of weekly hot-water washings.) Dust mites can become airborne during bedding changes. Allergic persons should not be present.

    If you must use carpeting (wood, tile and linoleum floors are best), then it must be cleaned thoroughly and frequently; the same rule applies to upholstered furniture, draperies and any other items than cannot be removed and washed. Make sure the person who is allergic does NOT do the vacuuming as the dust mites can become airborne and redistribute themselves.

    The vacuum cleaner bag acts as the filter in most vacuum cleaning systems. Replacing the standard bag with a high-filtration bag and an exhaust filter are economical ways to update an older vacuum cleaner and helps prevent the dust mites from escaping and becoming airborne during the vacuuming process.

    There are more expensive vacuums available with built-in HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters and a removable canister that can be washed. This system eliminates the problem with vacuum bags. As the older generation of vacuums is phased out, this development should be quite helpful in allergy control.

    DUST CLEANING TIPS

    *Purchase a good air purifier. Air purifiers literally purify the air and are very beneficial for allergy sufferers and asthmatics.

    *Remove carpeting and install wood, tile, or linoleum flooring. Hard surfaces can eliminate ninety percent of dust mites.

    *Minimize throw rugs; they are dust-catchers. If you must have them, they need to be washed in hot water once a week.

    *Avoid open bookshelves; they are great dust-catchers.

    *Keep all clothes in closed drawers or closets.

    *Remove clutter. Place hard-to-clean items in closed drawers or cabinets.

    *Install central air conditioning or window units. Keep windows closed, especially during periods of high pollen counts and windy conditions.

    *Use washable cotton or synthetic blankets. Use easily laundered cotton bedspreads or coverlets. Avoid materials that have nooks and crannies where dust mites can collect.

    *Your upholstered furniture is a prime allergen trapper. If you cannot purchase wood or vinyl furniture, put washable slipcovers on your furniture and wash once a week in hot water.

    *Install window shades made from cotton or synthetics and use washable cotton curtains. Avoid mini-blinds and heavy draperies, both are very heavy dust-catchers.

    *Do not use pillows made from feathers or foam rubber; moisture can become trapped, promoting mold.

    MOLD CLEANING TIPS

    *Wash shower curtains at least once a month in hot water and bleach.

    *Keep the humidity level at a minimum inside your home.

    *Always make sure there is proper ventilation.

    *Never carpet the bathroom.

    *Keep your refrigerator clean. Remove spoiled food promptly.

    *Dry your shoes and boots before putting in closet.

    If you or any member of your family suffers from allergies, follow the guidelines listed above to help keep your home as allergen-free as possible. If you are still suffering from allergy symptoms, see your doctor. He/she may have additional suggestions for allergy-proofing your home.

    Asthma Triggers Vs Causes

    If you have asthma, do you know the difference between its triggers and causes? You should -- your breathing may depend on it.

    Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease that makes airways (bronchial tubes) particularly sensitive to irritants, and this is characterized by difficulty in breathing. Asthma cannot be cured, but for most patients it can be controlled so that they have only minimal and infrequent symptoms and they can live an active life.

    If you have asthma, managing it should be an important part of your life. Controlling your asthma means staying away from things that bother your airways and taking your medicines as directed by your doctor.

    When discussing diseases, it is important to distinguish between causes and triggers. A trigger is something which sets off an attack, but which did not make you asthmatic in the first place.

    "Trigger factors", or "triggers", of asthma are used to describe the things which can cause an attack in someone who already has asthma..

    But you hear these words used for the dog to which you are allergic, or the cat, or the pollen that cause your asthma, or the mold on the wallpaper which causes your asthma, and even about house dust mites. Instead of calling these causes, which is what they are, people call them "triggers". They say that their cat is triggering their asthma.

    This is a bit like calling an on-coming car the trigger of an accident.

    Demoting causes, by calling them triggers, makes people think that the causes are not so important, and that maybe they should just keep using their inhalers instead of making efforts to root out the cause of their asthma and remove these from their environment.

    A cause is something, without which, an effect (such as asthma) will not occur. Thus, a cause is something without which you would not be asthmatic. There may be more than one cause for an asthma attack.

    We normally think of a trigger as something small that causes something big to happen suddenly. A trigger is one type of cause. But the implication is that the important causes have to be there already if the trigger is to work, and that the trigger is not important. It is the cause which is important.

    For example, if you don't have asthmatic lungs, or your asthma is under control, a cold won't give you any symptoms of asthma.

    In this sense, it is fair to call the cold a "trigger factor". In addition, if you stopped catching colds, this would not stop you having asthma, so in that sense it cannot be called the true cause of the disease.

    But if you have an attack whenever you go near dogs, then dogs in the past have been the cause, and a dog now can trigger an attack. In other words, a dog can be a cause of asthma and also the trigger of an attack.

    Concentrating only on the triggers of the attacks misses the really important point that contact with dogs was a cause of the asthma in the first place.

    Obviously, an asthma sufferer will want to avoid both the causes and triggers of asthma, but the causes are more serious. Without the causes, the triggers could do absolutely no harm.

    Self Help Tips For Dust Allergy Symptoms

    Self Help for Dust Allergies

    About one person in ten suffers from an allergy to dust mites. Dust mites are microscopic creatures of the arachnid family which also includes spiders and scorpions. Dust mites burrow deep into fibrous objects, such as clothing and carpeting. This makes it difficult to remove them by cleaning or vacuuming.

    The World of Dust Mites

    Dust mites thrive in indoor living spaces. They like temperatures between 75 and 80 degrees and the humidity levels of about 75%. Dust mites feed on shed scales from human skin, which is commonly found in carpeting, bedding, etc.

    Symptoms of Dust Mite Allergies

    People are not allergic to dust mites themselves, but rather to their fecal matter and decaying body parts. These mite waste products continue to cause allergic reactions long after the mite that produced them has died. Itchy, watery eyes, runny nose, clogged and itchy ear canals, and other respiratory problems are the most common symptoms. Symptoms are often worst at night because dust mites thrive in blankets, pillows and other bedding materials. A little bit of tossing and turning is all is takes to make some of the allergens airborne.

    Asthmatic people often have an especially difficult time with dust mites. Respiratory congestion, wheezing, and severe shortness of breathmay occur. Anyone suffering these symptoms should be treated by a licensed physician or asthma specialist.

    Self Help for Dust Allergies

    Reducing your exposure to dust mites will help to alleviate your symptoms. Here are some effective methods:

    - Vacuums equipped with special filtering systems help to reduce the amount of allergens in your home or office.
    - Dust mites live in areas with high concentrations of dust and debris. A cleaner house means fewer dust mites.
    - Focus on your bedroom. You probably spent one-third or more of your time there and it is often the room with the most dust mites.
    - Encase your box spring, mattress, and pillows in dust proof covers. An average bed can contain as many as ten million dust mites! Yikes!
    - Use polyester fiberfill pillows instead of kapok or feather pillows.
    - Use window shades instead of curtains or venetian blinds (both are dust magnets).
    - Wash blankets in hot water. Do not use wool or down blankets.
    - Avoid dust collecting knickkancks such as wall pennants, macrame hangings, throw pillows, and stuffed animals. Furniture should be wood, leather, plastic or metal--as upholstered furniture tends to trap dust and become a site for dust mites to grow.
    - Use hard wood or linoleum floors in place of carpeting. Dust mites love carpeting because it keeps them and well fed with human skin cells and fingernail residue.
    - Adjust the climate in your home. Use a dehumidifier and turn down the thermostat. Dust mites don't survive for long when the humidity below drops below 55 percent. Dust mites don't drink water like we do, they absorb it from the air through their skin. If it is too dry they will die of thirst.
    - Use specially designed filtration systems for furnaces and air conditioning units. These filters capture airborne allergens. It is also a good idea to place a cheesecloth screen over your bedroom heating vents to mimimize dust coming from a forced air style heating system.

    Night-Time Asthma Symptoms and Sleep

    Do Nighttime Asthma Symptoms Have You Counting Sheep?

    Do Nighttime Asthma Symptoms Have You Counting Sheep? by Stacey Moore

    According to a new asthma survey, 61 percent of asthma sufferers experience nighttime asthma symptoms, such as wheezing and coughing, which can significantly impact their daily lives. An estimated 20 million Americans suffer from asthma, and it is estimated that 40,000 of these patients miss work or school every day as a result of the chronic illness.

    What asthma sufferers may not realize is that their nighttime symptoms, including nighttime awakenings, may be preventing them from getting more than a good night's sleep.

    "Waking up at night with asthma symptoms, like shortness of breath, is often a sign that patients do not have their asthma under control," said Dr. Anjuli Nayak, board-certified specialist in allergy, asthma and immunology out of Normal, Ill. "Thankfully, proper asthma management can help control these bothersome symptoms."

    Prevention

    Demonstrating that asthma symptoms can be bothersome at any hour, 71 percent of patients reported experiencing asthma symptoms during the day as well. Proper asthma management is especially important for patients experiencing daytime and nighttime asthma symptoms.

    "Rather than suffer from coughing and wheezing that can keep you up or interrupt your sleep, talk to a physician," Nayak said. "I've found that with the continual use of a maintenance treatment, along with the occasional use of a rescue inhaler, many of my patients can help control their asthma symptoms."

    According to accepted asthma guidelines, inhaled corticosteroids (ICS), which reduce airway inflammation, are the preferred foundation therapy for mild to moderate persistent asthma. ASMANEX® TWISTHALER® 220 mcg (mometasone furoate inhalation powder) is the most recent ICS available. Previous data have demonstrated that ASMANEX significantly reduces daytime and nighttime asthma symptoms, especially nighttime awakenings requiring albuterol.

    Putting Symptoms to Bed

    With asthma under control, patients are less likely to endure bothersome nighttime wheezing and coughing that keeps them tossing and turning. If asthma symptoms are keeping you from your dreams, try taking the following precautions:

    • Schedule regular checkups with your physician to monitor your asthma

    • Take your maintenance asthma treatment as directed

    • Visit control-your-asthma.com for information on asthma symptom control.

    To help control nighttime asthma symptoms, talk to your doctor about an asthma treatment plan that works for you.

    ASMANEX® TWISTHALER® 220 micrograms brand of mometasone furoate inhalation powder is for the maintenance treatment of asthma for patients 12 years of age and older. ASMANEX TWISTHALER is also for asthma patients who are taking oral steroids where it may reduce or eliminate the need for oral steroids. ASMANEX TWISTHALER will NOT relieve sudden asthma symptoms. The most common side effects with ASMANEX TWISTHALER include headache, allergic rhinitis, sore throat, and upper respiratory infection. ASMANEX TWISTHALER therapy should not be used to treat acute asthma episodes where extra measures are required. Be careful while adjusting to a switch from an oral steroid to the inhaled steroid ASMANEX, as you may be less able to heal after surgery, infection or serious injury. Use ASMANEX as directed by your health care provider, since its ability to work in your lungs depends on regular use. If your asthma symptoms do not improve, or seem worse, contact your health care provider. Avoid coming into contact with the measles or chicken pox virus. Contact your health care provider immediately if you are exposed. If you are at an increased risk for decreased bone mineral density, the use of corticosteroids may increase your risk. Your health care provider should monitor your condition and if needed, provide treatment. Long-term use of inhaled corticosteroids, such as ASMANEX, may increase the risk of some eye problems such as cataracts or glaucoma.

    What Could A Sore Throat Be Indicating?

    Pain in the throat- time to see a doctor?

    Pain in the throat- time to see a doctor? by Groshan Fabiola

    A sore throat usually last around a week in cases of flu, a cold or different allergies that a person is aware of. These kinds of diseases can be very easily treated and are not very dangerous. But if the pain in your throat persists for more than seven days, there could be something else wrong.

    Well, this is why I am here for. Through this article you should be able to see if your sore throat is something to worry about. the first thing to do is look for any of the symptoms that are listed below.

    - a very painful throat;

    - difficulty when swallowing or breathing, even when opening your mouth;

    - blood in your saliva;

    - a rash or pain in your joints;

    - lumps in your neck;

    If any or all these symptoms apply to you, the best thing to do is go see a doctor right away.

    The most common thing that a person does when faced with a sore throat is to take antibiotics. This is not always a good thing, for they only work for bacteria, which could not be the cause of the pain in your throat. Doctors will better advice you what mediation to take for your problem.

    In cases of bacterial infection, penicillin is the most used drug. However, there are many more bacterial infections that require other drugs to be taken. As I have said before, antibiotics only work for bacteria, and not for viruses. The drugs should be taken as the doctor prescribed. If not there is the possibility that the infection is only to be suppressed and not cured, as intended. There are cases, in children, when the infection will reappear, despite treatment.

    If a person in your family tests positive in a strep test, the other members should take the test as well. Besides that it is recommended that they all be very careful and not drink one after another, wash their hand frequently, do not share any utensils and so on.

    In the other case, when a person test negative in the strep test, there are two sides to the story. The good one is that person does not have a streptococcal infection. The bad news is that he/ she might still have another kind of infection. This will be determined after more examinations and you are going to be given a treatment accordingly.
