Exercise Induced Asthma | Dealing with an exercise induced asthma symptom
Exercise Induced Asthma: Should I be concerned?
I remember as a younger lad how within 5-20 minutes of playing soccer, I had to (silently often times) go to a corner and catch my breath listening to the wheezing sounds of asthma start to kick in along with tightness of the chest.
If this scenario sounds familiar, then friends it is known as exercise induced asthma and is experienced by approximately 7% of the population, or about 20 million Americans.
Suffice it to say we need to know more about this.
Well, let's begin shall we?
Types of Exercise induced asthma symptoms:
Symptoms of exercise induced asthma include wheezing, tightness or pain in the chest, coughing, and in some cases, prolonged shortness of breath. Some symptoms are more noticeable than others, which means exercise-induced asthma can sometimes go undiagnosed.
People with exercise induced asthma often:
* will feel winded or tired easily during or after exercise
* will cough when he or she comes inside from playing outdoors
* can't run for more than a few minutes without stopping
This is not to say that a person with exercise induced asthma symptoms is simply out of shape, of course, there's a difference between someone with exercise-induced asthma and someone who is simply winded. An out-of-shape person can catch his or her breath within minutes, whereas it takes much longer for the person with exercise-induced asthma to recover. And extremes of temperature, especially cold weather, can make exercise-induced asthma even worse.
So What Can I do If I Have Exercise induced asthma symptoms?
Although it may be a while before you start to see improvement and control with asthma and related problems, (with the tips I will be providing shortly), that doesn't mean that you can't be physically active.
Remember, exercise is beneficial to both physical health and emotional well-being. Even if they are not striving to be the next fitness guru, almost all people with exercise induced asthma symptoms should be able to exercise to their full ability with appropriate diagnosis and treatment.
Now, one stand-out as far as being both a therapeutic exercise for cleansing, while simultaneously rebuilding the body is Yoga. Yes my friend, some yoga poses such as the Sun Salutations, the Shoulder-Stand and its counter-poses do serve as effective Yogic exercise to aid with Exercise induced asthma symptoms owing to the positioning of the body while executing them.
Furthermore, when using them as exercises for asthma control, one need not worry about the common exercise-induced asthma attacks that may come as a result of vigorous activity as these poses are very calm and involve very little motion…hey, it’s Yoga after all.
Now for correcting breathing habits-a necessity in any form of asthma control: natural or synthetic, allow me to introduce the Sun Salutations. Owing to the mild back and forward bending motions and the emphasis on focused breathing, folks, this combination of poses, sun-bathing and focus is a known panacea amongst the Indians for correcting one’s breathing-a much sought for factor when using any kind of Asthma Treatment.
They should be performed at your intensity-as will be described in the text below; Fitness: Inside & Out- but as soon as you are able to perform 12 rounds with comfort, you may choose to perform the other poses and body-weight exercises described in full detail with illustrative photos and precise instructions. This will aid you in re-building your cardio-vascular endurance and also speeding up detoxification which is a huge factor in natural healing and needless to say asthma treatment.
Nonetheless, there are still some sports that are less likely to cause problems for people with exercise-induced asthma, and these include:
* indoor swimming
* walking
* jogging
* hiking
* downhill skiing
* baseball
* football
* gymnastics
* shorter track and field events
Although the type and duration of recommended activity varies with each individual, some activities are better for people with Exercise Induced Asthma. Swimming is often considered the sport of choice for asthmatics and those with a tendency toward bronchospasm because of its many positive factors. These include: a warm, humid atmosphere, year-round availability, toning of upper body muscles, and the way the horizontal position may help mobilize mucus from the bottom of the lungs.
It must also be noted that Team sports that require short bursts of energy, such as baseball, football, wrestling, golfing, gymnastics, short-term track and field events or surfing are less likely to trigger exercise induced asthma symptoms than sports requiring continuous activity such as soccer, basketball, field hockey or long-distance running.
Endurance sports, like long-distance running and cycling and those that require extended energy output, like soccer and basketball, may be more challenging for people with exercise-induced asthma. This is especially true for cold-weather endurance sports like cross-country skiing or ice hockey.
But that doesn't mean you can't participate in these sports if you truly enjoy them.
In addition to the natural tips for asthma control that I will be providing shortly, here are some tips to to see to it that you don't necessarily have to miss out on your favorite sports.
Tips for People With Exercise-Induced Asthma-in relation to sports
For the most part, people with exercise-induced asthma can do anything their peers can do. But be sure to follow the suggestions below:
* Warm up before exercise to prevent chest tightening. (Warm-up exercises can include 5 to 10 minutes of walking or any other light activity, in addition to stretching or flexibility exercises.)
* Breathe through the nose during exercise.
* Take brief rests during exercise and use rescue medication, as prescribed, if symptoms start.
* Cool down after exercise to help slow the change of air temperature in the lungs.
Suffice it to say that it's also a good idea for people with exercise-induced asthma to avoid exercising outside during very cold weather. If you must, wearing a ski mask or a scarf over the mouth and nose should help.

Abstinence from the products above is a must and a fact that has been in effect in several programs aimed at correcting respiratory health and providing effective methods fot the treatment and solution for asthma such as the "Breath Retaining Program For Asthmatics" developed by the Russian, Dr. Buteyko.
