Staying fit is a great goal that will help you lead a longer, healthier life but if your brain can't keep up, then what's the point. The brain is a muscle too and it follows the same "use it or lose it" policy as your other muscles. So how can you keep your brain fit? Brain exercise is the answer.



Two of the most important factors in keeping your brain healthy are traditional exercise and nutrition. Keep your body healthy and your brain will follow suit. But after that there are other ways to exercise your mind.



You've probably heard people describe one of their older relatives like this, "my Uncle Larry is a sharp as a tack, he does the New York Times Crossword puzzle everyday." Well, Uncle Larry has the right idea but his execution is a little off. You see the best way to stimulate your brain is to break free of everyday activities and challenge yourself in new and unexpected ways. By doing the crosswords everyday, he has created a familiar routine that becomes less challenging everyday. Uncle Larry, it's time to add Word Searches and Sudoku for some variety.



Activities to exercise your mind:



* If you're right handed, trying brushing your teeth with your left hand



* Try accomplishing something with your eyes closed, such as putting the key in your front door or walking to your fridge



* Try a different route on your daily commute



* Reconstruct your day by writing down what you did. For example, if you take a trip to the zoo, when you get home try to write down all the animals that you saw in the order that your saw them.



Your mother may have told you that playing too many video games will turn your brain to mush, but she was wrong. The Nintendo DS Lite has a few games that are designed to exercise your brain and they are quite good. They're varied enough to avoid becoming routine and continue to challenge even after repeated playing. But the best part is that they're fun to spend some time with.



I recently played my cousin's copy of Big Brain Academy on her Nintendo DS. The game consists of a bunch of fun puzzles that you try to finish in a set amount of time. Just as you get the hang of the puzzle, it's over and there's a new one to try. When I finished, the game informed me that my score was that of a hair stylist.



If you’re trying to fight off the effects of old age, exercising your body is great but don’t forget to exercise your mind.

    Now that I'm older the aging issue finally has begun to make sense. While laughing on one hand and crying on the other it dawns on me that turning the corner in the last lap so to speak isn't really all that bad. Having been healthy all these years was coincidential to me but I came to realize that I'm very fortunate and grateful for the guidance and help I've received over these years. Keeping simple issues in a proper order was lucikly for me a definate blessing. Having grown older in the aging process came quietally without a roar.



    By chance, living with parents who insisted on a whole food diet provided us with the highest nutrient content available. Taking in vitamins, minerals, herbs and amino acids on a regular daily bases was part of the norm. Having been involued in sports activities helped provide the daily avtivity and movement that the body needs to stay healthy as well.



    The various stresses and challenges in life were there as well, but handled fairly easy because of the overall positive environment that our physiological function was supported by. I eventually moved into the area's of nutrition as I became older and contined to learn more and more about those simple things my parents did that were unknowingly so beneficial for me. As I think about these alarming issues today,



    1. The Journal of the American Medical Association reported in 2002 that 80% of adults in the US take some type of medication in a given week.

    2. According to the National Institute for Health Management, Americans spent $175.2 billion on pharmaceutical drugs in 2001.

    3. Retail pharmacies filled 3 billion prescriptions in 2000.

    4. The United States spent $1.5 trillion on healthcare in 2002 and estimates predict that we will spend $3 trillion by 2011.



    I can only have warm and loving thoughts towards my parents who are gone today. Taking in supplements to a reasonable extent, try eating healthy with some daily exercise and you'll have a very good chance of experiencing a heathly aging process as well.

    Protecting what you already have



    Deep set lines might look distinguished on some men, but others don’t want these obvious signs of their age. To help prevent these lines, men need to consider applying a sunscreen with an ample protection factor. While the more than 65 000 new cases of skin cancer each year in the UK should be enough to coax anyone into wearing sunscreen, the fact of the matter is that it’s also a crucial step towards anti aging skin care. The sun inflicts compounding damage, meaning that each time you step into the sun without protection; you’re damaging your skin more. Here are some ways to start adding protection to your daily routine:



    • After washing your face in the morning, add a thin layer of sunscreen to your face and neck as well as the backs of your hands and any other exposed skin.

    • Reapply this sunscreen as the day goes on

    • If you should get your face or hands wet or sweaty, you will want to apply more sunscreen



    Correcting sun damage once you’ve gotten burned



    What’s interested about anti aging skin care is that many people believe that all hope is lost once they do have a sunburn, so they stop putting on protection, thinking all is lost. However, this is not the case. Studies have shown that skin can repair itself if you act quickly after a sunburn and try to protect yourself from future occurrences.

    How Exercise Can Help With Anti Aging

    Anti Aging Facial Skin Care

    If you’re serious about anti-aging facial skin care, you owe it to yourself to investigate all the alternatives. While cosmetics might seem to be the logical solution, over time their cost might prove prohibitive. Botox injections, chemical peels or microdermabrasion can give superior (and more immediate) results that often justify the additional cost.
    Botox injections relax the muscles that create wrinkles like the “frown lines” on your forehead. The treatment lasts three to six months, and lines and wrinkles either disappear or dramatically diminish during this period. Besides frown lines, Botox is effective on crow’s feet, laugh lines and forehead wrinkles. A medical doctor must administer Botox injections. After several treatments, some doctors report that the period of effectiveness is extended.
    Chemical peels are meant to improve skin appearance and diminish wrinkles by removing one or more of the skin’s outer layers. Like Botox, chemical peels are done by a medical doctor and usually consist of phenol, TCAs (trichloroacetic acids) or AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids). Phenol is the strongest of the chemical peel agents and provides the most dramatic results. TCAs are the next strongest, but several treatments are usually required. AHAs are the least strong and are generally used for skin brightening and smoothing, rather than wrinkle removal. Phenol and TCAs will remove wrinkles and blemishes, and even out skin tone.
    Microdermabrasion does not require a medical doctor. It can be performed by a trained aesthetician. In this procedure, tiny crystals are sprayed against the face with a device similar to a sand blaster, producing a gentle polishing action that removes the dead outer layer of skin on the face. Microdermabrasion is less harsh than chemical peels and works well for women with sensitive skin. Treatments must be repeated for maximum effectiveness.
    While not for everyone, Botox injections, chemical peels and microdermabrasion are all valid methods of anti-aging facial skin care. If you want fast results and are willing to spend the money, these treatments can provide significant improvements in skin texture and appearance.
