Understanding Your Skin Type Is Critical

Acne is not only embarrassing and unattractive but if severe enough it can hinder social interaction, even result in depression. Acne doesn't happen overnight and thus it must be treated systematically and with patience for long term results but regardless is what approach you take - topical or internal treatment you may have to try and number of different treatments to find one that will work for you.

Understanding Your Skin Type
Because everyone has a little different type of body chemistry and skin type acne treatment cannot take a one size fits all approach. As a result, before implementing any acne treatment it's important to understand your skin type in order to achieve the results you desire.

Types of Skin
In a nutshell, there are basically three types of skin: oily, dry and normal. However, what makes acne so difficult to treat for some is that they have a mixture of all three skin types on different parts of their face. For example, they may have an oily nose, a dry forehead and fairly normal skin on the rest of your face. Once you have determined your skin type you can start an acne treatment and skin care. If you don't feel comfortable in determining your own skin type you may want to consult a dermatologist who will be able to properly diagnose your skin issues and recommend a plan of action for correcting it.

Skin Care
Caring for your skin should is a daily process because it's exposed to a continuous bombardment of the elements like wind, temperature extremes and air quality issues - both indoor and out.

Skin care is an essential step in properly treating acne on a long term basis because properly maintained skin and proper acne treatment go hand in hand. For example, both require keeping the skin clean and properly hydrated and both require proper nutrition because many skin issues are caused from poor nutrition. Impurities from poor nutrition are then eliminated from the body through the skin and drinking plenty of good, fluoride free water (distilled water is the purest form of water) to assist your body in properly eliminating toxins is essential. Drinking soda or coffee or other fluids is not a substitute for water.

Once your acne clears you must continue the skin care and nutrition habits that resulted in your improved complexion or you'll find yourself - regardless of age back to having problems with your skin.

Acne treatment and skin care are a necessary process of your daily routine in order to keep your skin clear from acne and from the early signs of aging but it's also necessary if you want to maintain your youthful appearance for as long as possible. Acne cannot be cured from the outside but it can be from the inside and therefore if you don't change your lifestyle and eating habits it can and most likely will continue to reoccur throughout your lifetime.

There are acne treatment centers throughout the country should you so chose to take that direction in treating your acne but like a form of medical care it makes sense to get more than one opinion and then decide which one fits your particular situation - good luck.

    The "acne antibiotic game".

Some call it the "acne antibiotic game". First comes tetracycline, then comes doxycycline, and then your doctor finally recommends erythromycin. But what do you do when these common antibiotics fail to control your acne outbreaks? Well typically, your dermatologist might suggest isotretinoin- the ultimate prescription acne drug.

But why is isotretinoin the final pharmaceutical answer for acne? It's probably because excessive or inappropriate usage of antibiotics could lead to gram-negative folliculitis. Gram-negative folliculitis is caused by bacterial interference, and replacement of the gram-positive bacteria on the face and within the mucous membranes of the nose, with gram-negative bacteria.

And while acne is readily diagnosed, according to a study in the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology, incidences of gram-negative folliculitis are probably underestimated in patients with re-occurring and difficult to treat acne.

Even though isotretinoin has been successfully used to treat gram-negative folliculitis, this potent acne drug is not always accessible to acne sufferers because of health or monetary reasons. So the question arises- are there other methods to control or destroy gram-negative bacteria and bring acne outbreaks under control?

Two proteins that bring acne aggravating bacteria under control Researchers from the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Denver, Colorado have discovered that the protein lactoferrin changes the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria. As lactoferrin disrupts the protective barrier of the gram-negative bacterium, this new vulnerability allows another anti-microbial protein called lysozyme to further destroy the bacterium.

At-home acne remedy The gram-negative fighters lactoferrin and lysozyme occur naturally in products such as milk. Likewise, whey protein contains several anti-bacterial proteins including lactoferrin, lactoperoxidase, lysozyme and immunoglobulins. You can make an at-home acne mask to help abate pimple outbreaks by using whey protein. (Whey protein is widely available in health food stores.)

Step 1: Cleanse your face using warm water and a clean washcloth. Pat face dry.

Step 2: In a bowl, mix one tablespoon of whey protein with just enough water to create a paste.

Step 3: Apply the paste to your face and allow to dry for 5-10 minutes

Step 4: Rinse off the paste with warm water and a face cloth. Apply moisturizer.

You can use this whey mask once a day as a natural part of your acne control regime. Sources: Böni, R and B Nehrhoff. Treatment of Gram-Negative Folliculitis in Patients with Acne. American Journal of Clinical Dermatology; 2003, vol 4, no 4, pp 273-276(4).

    Choose your acne products carefully

There are many products available for treating and helping to prevent acne. Some are developed especially for this purpose, and contain acne medications and substances, which clean pores and reduce the chances of acne appearing. Others are simply cleansers, designed to clean the skin and remove excess oils and dirt, which helps avoid pimples.

So which products are helpful, and which could be harmful to your skin?

Soap is one of the most frequently used products to clean the skin, and for some people is proper to use on acne areas. But, it can aggravate these areas depending on one's skin type, skin sensitivity, and actual acne condition. That is why it is important to use a special cleanser that will have respect for these factors. This will help you avoid further irritation to the skin and will help faster healing. If you have sensitive skin, stay away from fragrant soaps, because the chemicals in them can cause breakouts. If your skin is oily, use soaps that are oil-free. If you are using products containing a certain amount of oil, these will add oil to your skin, causing the pores to get clogged and it is possible occurring breakouts.

You need to pay attention to your makeup products, because these can contain chemicals that clog the pores and irritate the skin, causing pimples.

It is better if you use cosmetics that are not cometigenic. It means they won't clog your pores. If a cosmetic product
irritates your skin, stop using it and find another one that does not. Product containers contain information about what is in the product, and what skin types it works best on. You can get information by reading these labels.

Remember not to over wash your skin, as this can cause it to become irritated and acne developing. Also, wash your skin gently.

Do not squeeze pimples, as this causes the bacteria to go deeper within the skin, and the area around the pimple to become inflamed. Instead, clean your face and use a toner to alleviate the inflammation and bring out the pus.

Choose your acne products carefully. Consult a physician if usage of over the counter hygiene products is not working
    efficiently.

    Skin Disorders 101

Shelley is a 32-year-old mother of two beautiful girls. This person grew up with red spots on the face. Since this did not pose any problems, these were perceived to be freckles that people get in the teenage years, which will eventually go away as the individual, gets older.

Unfortunately, this remained until Shelley was much older and was shocked with the diagnosis given by the doctor. The specialist said that this woman had Acne.

Acne is a considered to be common skin disorder. This may appear in the form or blockheads, whiteheads, cysts but in the case of Shelley were red spots on the face. The disease as the doctor explained starts in the teenage years but will only affect women only in the thirties.

The specialist continued to explain that scientists have not yet been able to determine the cause of this disease. One theory often suggested is due to the hormone levels that normally increase during puberty.

The part of the face where acne came out reacts by producing excess oils. Bacteria that people get from dust and dirt then mix with it producing the substances that cause Acne. The hair follicles in that area may also react with dead skin cells causing the person to have pimples.

Some people think that going on a diet and eating certain foods often cause Acne. Tests have not yet confirmed that but its best to stop consuming these items if this causes it to worsen.

Patients who notice anything wrong in the face should consult with a dermatologist immediately. This is because treating it in the later stages will leave permanent scars on the face which wont happen if action is taken during its early stages.

Acne is treatable using a series of antibiotics. Four examples of these are erythromycin, clindamycin, tetracycline and benzoyl peroxides that should be taken on an empty stomach to improve absorption by the body.

The doctor may also recommend the use of lotions or creams if these are needed. A few examples of these are peeling agents like sulfur and topical Vitamin A such as those found in Airol, Eudyna, Retin A or Stieva A.

The only way for the dermatologist to monitor the progress of the patient will be for the individual to visit the clinic regularly. The person should advice the doctor if any allergies or side effects occur so that another product can be prescribed instead.

The big question for many women will be if the individual can still use cosmetics after being diagnosed with Acne? The answer is yes. It is advisable to use water based and oil free versions sparingly so that this will not hamper the medications that have been given.

The person should do more than just rely on antibiotics, creams or lotions to clean the face. The most affordable way will be to wash it with soap and water or with medical cleansers. People who have oily skin are advised to do this three times a day while others can do this after getting up in the morning and before going to bed in the evening.

Acne is just one of the many skin disorders that can happen to anybody. Proper hygiene, a good diet and a regular visit to the doctor can prevent the disease from worsening.

If acne is your biggest problem, some suggest to go for chemical peel treatment

We might spend a large sum of money on skin care products and the treatment looks great. We actually don’t need to spend so much money on skin care product but an hour is all we need. People usually go to dermatologist to get their microderm abrasion and chemical peels but what are this two treatment?

If it is not an acne problem, then pimples will also make your day worse. If acne is your biggest problem, it is time to go for chemical peel treatment. Chemical peel is a process that reveals a fresh layer of skin on your face by exfoliating your skin. With this treatment, you will have a young look and vibrant that seems to rejuvenate your skin. By doing microderm abrasion and chemical peels, you might lose those wrinkles on your face and also signs of aging. This will make sure your skin have a complete package that will make you look young.

Our skin covers the whole body and it is a living tissue that breathes and it might also die in which we call dead skin cell. This cells when exposed to the sun will create darkness on your skin. In this case, it is best to exfoliate these layers to ensure your skin looks fresh.

Microdermabrasion is a surgical treatment that reduces acne scars from the skin surface. It will also reduce fine lines and large pores from the skin. By following this treatment, blood flow will improve and may cure pigmentation problem. It is done by using fine aluminum crystals to light up the affected areas. This treatments effectiveness can be seen after 2 weeks of treatment

There might be some changes in the skin after completing acne treatment and might surprise you in a peculiar way. Many small bumps that are white in color occur around the follicles which are known as follicular macular atrophy. This will have effect that last forever. Due to aging, scars visibility is affected due to collagen of the skin are reduced after 40 years old. These loss of collagen can lead to very visible scar from the past acne treatment.

if you notice acne on your scalp

Although many people place scalp acne under one umbrella category, there are actually a few different types of skin conditions that can be confused for acne on the scalp and they range in severity from mildly irritating to a variety that is painful and can lead to scarring. Scalp acne can appear at any place on the scalp and each type has its own telltale signs and treatment methods. As with facial and back acne, there is no clear cut reason why some people have it and others don’t, but genetics, hormones, stress, and skin care all play a role in the development of any type of acne. However, though facial and back acne both occur in the same manner and from the same bacteria infection, there are several forms of scalp acne that do not follow suit. Each different type of scalp acne has unique symptoms and causes, but share several treatments with each other as well as with facial and back acne.

Although many different skin conditions occur on the scalp, sometimes it is just plain old acne. Acne on your scalp can be difficult to treat, but washing your hair enough to keep it from getting greasy is one of the best things you can do. Many times an oral medication is needed to get scalp acne under control since the scalp is tough to treat directly. If you do attempt any topical treatments, make sure to avoid benzoyl peroxide since it can bleach your hair.

Other than normal acne, the most common form of scalp acne is called folliculitis. Although folliculitis commonly occurs on the scalp, any hair follicle can develop folliculitis. Like other types of acne, the affected pore or hair follicle becomes infected by bacteria, but folliculitis is caused by the Staphylococcus or staph bacteria while facial acne is caused by different bacteria called p. acnes. However, folliculitis can also be caused by yeast or mites in the hair. Folliculitis can develop because the hair follicle is damaged by shaving, wearing a hat, or exposure to makeup or chemicals that affect the follicle. Once a follicle is damaged, it is very susceptible to infection and, consequently, folliculitis. Folliculitis usually develops along the front hairline and itches a great deal, making folliculitis difficult to bear on a cosmetic and comfort level. Folliculitis treatment varies depending on the cause of infection. Doctors often prescribe an antibacterial or antifungal medicine to get rid of the severe cases of folliculitis, although some shampoos will eliminate folliculitis. If you wish to treat folliculitis on your scalp, look for a shampoo that contains one of these ingredients: 2.5% selenium sulfide, 1% selenium, or 50% propylene glycol. Mild folliculitis may go away without treatment, but if it reoccurs, you should consult a doctor. Severe cases that continue to reoccur may need to be treated by performing laser removal on the infected follicle or follicles.

Although it is sometimes classified as a separate condition, necrotica milaris is a severe type of folliculitis that affects the scalp. It is considered a chronic form of folliculitis, but is treated in the same way. Unlike normal folliculitis, nocrotica milaris has the potential to scar and stop hair from growing in the scarred area. In some cases, Accutane may be prescribed to eliminate necrotica milaris.

Varioliformis is another type of scalp acne that many physicians consider to be a type of folliculitis, and is treated in the same manner. Varioliformis is characterized by brown pimple-like formations around the front hairline.

The most severe form of scalp acne is called Dissecting Cellulite. It most commonly occurs in black males between the ages of 20 and 40, but it occurs in men and women of other races. Dissecting cellulite often begins with a case of folliculitis that will not respond to normal treatments. Dissecting cellulite will typically occur in large patches that have raised nodules and no hair growth. In severe cases, these nodules can be drained surgically, and X-rays were the preferred treatment for decades. However, many physicians will first try Accutane, which has been shown to have mixed results. It has also been found that ablative lasers are effective in curing dissecting cellulite.

Although scalp acne occurs in a few different forms, it is typically regular acne or a form of folliculitis. Because of the seriousness of some forms of folliculitis, if you notice acne on your scalp, you should treat it as quickly as possible. If you do not want to see a physician at first, at least try to treat it with the above mentioned shampoos to see if this home remedy will clear it up. However, if home treatments do not cure your scalp acne, you should see a physician so that baldness does not result.

acne can exact an even heavier emotional toll

It’s common knowledge that acne, even in mild cases, can cause permanent facial scaring which is unfortunate. But did you know that acne can exact and even heavier emotional toll? Psychological scarring and social disabling among acne sufferers, both teenagers and adults, actually can have far more serious long term consequences than the physical fallout.

By some estimates, around 85% of people between the ages of 12 and 25 develop acne. The psychological and social impacts during this emotionally sensitive time of life are huge. Adolescents are in the throes of developing their personalities just when acne manifests itself. During this time, peer acceptance is critical, and peer status becomes inextricably woven with physical appearance and attractiveness, often leading to severe emotional disturbance when acne erupts.

Studies indicate that psychological consequences from acne primarily take the form of embarrassment, impaired self-image, low self-esteem, self-consciousness, frustration, and anger. There is a subset, as also shown in studies, where the sufferer believes that their personality has been adversely and permanently affected. Depression, to some degree, haunts younger people with acne to a greater extent than in the normal population. However, there is no clear indication that their depression in relation to acne is generally severe enough to require treatment. Most teens studied were far more likely to describe their mental state in terms of embarrassment, self consciousness, impaired self esteem and the like. Adults with acne, however, are more prone to suffer anxiety and depression needing treatment.

Acne flare-ups trigger these negative feelings as soon as they appear, and are aggravated in the teenage setting by taunting, stigmatizing, and apprehensions of being scrutinized and judged. Simply walking past a mirror can bring on feelings of self loathing. Some people report that their emotional reactions are at their worst when looking in the mirror.

Feeding acne’s emotional fallout are media generated ideal images of unblemished skin. People with acne become acutely aware that they have failed to live up to the ideal of perfect, flawless skin projected in television, film and advertising. Magazines targeting the younger female demographic certainly never portray anyone with pimples, nor, for that matter, will you encounter such images in publications for more mature audiences. One’s sexual attractiveness, so seemingly vital in the teenage years, is then found to be abysmal by comparison.

Of course, there’s a something of a paradox at work here. One of the acne myths is that stress in one’s life causes acne. Studies have proven that this is untrue, and, in fact, it’s the other way around. Acne can cause stress which, in turn, suggests that it was stress that caused the acne in the first place.

So, what are the remedies? First and foremost, of course, is treatment to relieve the symptoms of acne outbreaks as soon as they appear. Given the nature of the disease, there are numerous approaches to treatment (accompanied by information overload). A proactive stance toward treatment is the most effective way to ameliorate the damaging feelings. Beyond that, support and sensitivity on the part of one’s family and close friends goes a long way toward propping up both teenagers and adults while treatment is in progress.

If you are suffering from acne, you ought to know that...

Throughout an individual's adolescent years, a lot of people suffer a universal skin condition called acne. Most normally referred to as pimples, acne most frequently breaks out on your face. Nevertheless acne can be found on other parts of your body such as your back, neck, chest and shoulders. Even though acne is universal to most teenagers this condition may also afflict adults. Acne crosses genders and race afflicting both boys and girls equally.

The scientific term for acne is Acne Vulgaris. Acne causes breakouts on your skin known as lesions. These lesions can be acne whiteheads, blackheads, or cysts. These lesions fappea as a consequence of your pores being clogged. Acne most normally occurs throughout one’s puberty because at this time your body produces lots of an oily substance known as sebum. Sebum is necessary throughout puberty to keep your hair and skin soft and lubricated. Nevertheless throughout puberty your body makes more sebum than you need. This surplus sebum can cause your pores to clog and give your skin and oily feeling.

Another of the changes that you will discover occurring throughout puberty is an excess production of follicle cells. These dead skin cells can quickly build up and in concert with this surplus sebum combine to form whiteheads. This mixture of dead skin cells and oil provides a great breeding ground for bacteria. This can results in swelling and redness and causes pimples.

If you are suffering from acne, you ought to know that acne it is extremely common. Acne affects close to 85% of people between 12 and 24. About 25% of these people suffer from acne on other parts of their body in addition to their face. These people may also have acne on their back and neck. Roughly 40% of people who suffer from acne inquire about professional treatment as a consequence of the severity of their condition.

One of the most frequent areas for pimples to occur is what is called the “T Zone” of a person’s face. This zone includes a person’s nose, chin, and forhead. Nevertheless acne may show up on your cheeks and other parts of your face. The next most common place for acne to show up is your back. Then, comes your neck, your chest, and your shoulders.

By the time most people get to their 20s, acne has all but cleared up. In some folks however, acne may still persist throughout their adult years. Some people are ill-fated enough to suffer from acne for the first time as adults. As far as gender, acne is can be found in more boys than girls but only by a slight margin.

Because acne affects a person’s appearance and self image it can be trouble for many people. Because of the fact that most teens are susceptible to self image issues, having acne can cause teenagers to feel depressed and reduce their self-confidence. Having acne may keep teenagers from interacting socially and may even cause them to feel angry and frustrated.

There are thankfully many new acne treatments. One of the first things you want to insure is that you keep your skin clean and oil free... skin care as well as your choice of skin care products is important. You want to wash your skin gently with soap and water at least twice every day. In particular after activities which cause perspiration. A good acne cleanser may help. You will discover there are also various medical treatments that are now available for acne, some are over-the-counter and some are prescribed by a doctor.

If you are suffering from a serious acne condition you may want to see a dermatologist. The dermatologist might prescribe topical ointments or an acne cream which can be used on your skin as well as some medications such as acne antibiotics which help to flight the bacteria that cause your pimples. Your dermatologist will also provide you with advice concerning your diet and perhaps other changes to your lifestyle which will help to clear up your acne.

Talking with your teenager about acne

One of the best ways for parents to help their children is to learn as much as possible about the various types of acne and how it can be treated. Armed with this knowledge you can help your teenager make appropriate decisions about medications or whether or not to consult with the dermatologist.

Just because you had acne when you were a teenager doesn't make you an expert. New medications and new methods of treatment have been developed so that most common acne conditions can be brought under control. There are a variety of approaches, so knowing what is available will help you decide which is best for your child.

Consulting with a dermatologist is always a good idea for any skin condition. Those spots that appear on your teenager's skin are most likely to be acne, but there are other skin conditions that resemble it. Consulting with a dermatologist will give you a definite diagnosis and also provide you with as many treatment options as possible.

Talking with your teenager about acne can be touchy because he or she is likely to be embarrassed by their appearance. You know best how to approach your teenager, but in general you need to be supportive and understanding. Never accuse your child of following habits that cause acne -- the myths about oily foods, chocolate, or sex causing acne have been proven to be untrue.

Most likely, your teenager is trying everything he or she can to control the acne. Even if they don't want to talk about it, it most likely is one of their major concerns. After all, acne can affect self image and sociability and in severe cases can lead to depression and withdrawal.

Let your teenager know that you are available and that you are willing to help him or her with their acne. Talking about your own experiences may help and certainly can't hurt – it may give your teenager a broader perspective on the condition.

Even though it may be small comfort, remind your child that most teenagers suffer from acne -- they are not alone. It is estimated that 85% of adolescents have acne, and 40% have acne severe enough to need treatment by a dermatologist. If, after trying a few over-the-counter medications without success, encourage your child to go to a dermatologist. Medical treatments can include oral medicines, physical treatments, and ointments and lotions which are applied directly on the acne. These treatments can help clear up the acne while offering relief from the physical discomfort it causes.

Acne does not last forever. As your child gets older the acne should become less of a problem, and by the time they are in their early 20s should be a thing of the past.

Know the specific reasons behind your acne

It is sad, but true. Whatever the reasons behind it may be, you have acne. The pores in your skin are becoming clogged with debris, bacteria, and dead cells. Blackheads, red and inflamed pores, and other blemishes have begun to tarnish your once clear skin. If you are fortunate enough to know the specific reasons behind your acne, you can help to control it.

Other people out there are constantly searching for the next breakthrough in fighting acne. With modern day medicine, different and unique treatments are coming out all the time. But are these newfangled ideas of any use to you? How can they help your acne, and more importantly, will they help your acne?

One of these new ideas is a liquid antiseptic. When you pop or squeeze a pimple, you may be doing damage to your skin, opening a wound and leaving the potential for a tiny pot mark later on in your face. However, a lot of times people forget this information or simply cannot help themselves. A pimple is aggravatingly large or simply begging to be popped and we are more than happy to oblige.

When you pop it, you can put this liquid antiseptic over the small wound, which will fill in the area and then harden. It is somewhat like an instant scab, protecting the damaged area from bacteria and giving it the chance to heal faster and possibly better.

The catch? This is not a way to prevent your breakouts. Nor is it a way to help heal current breakouts. This product is more for patching up blemishes you yourself have poked at too much. In that respect, it can be handy, but what you really want is to keep breakouts from occurring in the first place. Are you thinking you could put it over your pores in the first place?

No, because that is definitely not what this product is for, nor is it recommended that you do this, as blocking your pores completely will only lead to oil buildup and an irritated pore, hence more acne. A good product, but not what you are looking for unless you are constantly popping your acne blemishes, something you want to avoid doing in the first place.

The second so called hot product (pardon the pun) is a device that supposedly causes bacteria to self destruct. How is this possible? A small, hand held device that could easily be mistaken for a cell phone in size and metallic coloring, has a tip that heats up that is then placed on the skin. The heat used is supposed to very depending upon the pimple you have put the heat on, and upon first contact, it feels quite hot. This heat is supposed to cause the bacteria to begin self destructing, thus reducing the size of the pimple over a period of 24 hours and a few uses of the device.

The catch? The claim for devices such as these (which can cost as much as $100 and upward) is that they work 90 percent of the time. However, you will not know whether or not you will fall into the 10 percent that it will not work for. Sure, 90 percent is a pretty good number, but it does not matter for the 10 percent the device does not help.

It is also recommended that you use the device as soon as possible on a pimple, otherwise it may grow too big and be out of control, which means it will be beyond the help of the heat the device uses. Other restrictions include only using it on mild to moderate acne, and it works only for pimples. It will have no effect on whiteheads, blackheads, or pustules. Sure, it looks cool and sounds pretty nifty, but expensive and may not even work for your skin.

New technology is great and appreciated, but your best bet for helping acne is by understanding the reasons for it and maintaining a good skin care regimen. Eating right, exercising, and taking care of your skin can make a great deal of difference, and if necessary, you can always rely on specific creams and medications already proven to help acne.

Acne is not associated with women only

Acne, is an anytime uninvited guest in your life. Acne is not a term associated with women only. It is a 'manly' term as well. Men in all age groups carry the possibility of being affected by it. There are various types of acne that might find home on your body but in specific terms Acne Conglobata can attack men greatly. It is a severe form of acne and could really get hostile if not paid heed to.

Men, if suffering from acne on the face, need to take special care. Shaving could be a big problem for them. If you are facing the shaving blues while coping with acne, here are some tips that would make the process easier.

    Shaving tips during breakout:

    1. Wash your face before you start shaving. Use hot, soapy water and wash it carefully.

    3. Be careful and do not nick the blemish, because that can be painf
