Abdominal Exercises and Pregnancy

Abdominal Exercises and Pregnancy

In his new book Exercising Through Your Pregnancy (Human Kinetics, 1998), Dr. James Clapp, Director of Research for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Metro Health Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, has compiled extensive research that indicates:

Women who continue regular exercise throughout pregnancy tend to have easier, shorter, and less complicated labors.

Starting or continuing regular exercise during pregnancy decreases physical discomforts and hastens recovery.

Exercise during pregnancy has both short-and long-term benefits for the fetus in utero. These babies tolerate the stresses of late pregnancy, labor, and delivery better than the babies of women in the control groups who did not exercise. All aspects of growth and development after birth for babies of mothers in exercise programs are equal to or better than those observed in the control groups.

That said, doing abdominal exercises during pregancy could be a safe choice, when preacticed correctly.

Certainly, whatever puts excessive strain on the back should be avoided, repetitions should be reduced and the executions of abdominal exercises in pregnancy have to be modified.

The abdominal muscles change during pregnancy. The outermost abdominal muscle, which is the support system for the back, separates (diastasis) due to the enlarging uterus pressing on it. This separation weakens the support system of the back and may cause back problems. It is therefore important to modify the abdominal exercises during pregnancy so that this separation does not increase.

So research properly what works best for you and your pregnancy as far as exercise is concerned.

    Yoga Abdominal Exercises

    If one thing is cool about yoga it's that it's perhaps one of the exercises that tends to work the body as a whole unit.

    Which in regards to abdominal exercises, seems to be of some relevance.

    Have you heard of the Abdominal Isolation Exercises such as
    1. Agni Sara
    2. Uddiyana Bhandha
    3. Nauli

    Well, I didn't think you would have, however, they are of yogic origin and yes these exercises do target the abdominal regions perhaps the way no other exercises can.

    I will be discussing them in due course but this is just a teaser.

    Exercises for Lower Abdominal Toning

    I had mentioned the efficiency of the ab-wheel as far as being a superior abdominal exercise equipment.

    However, I may have failed to mention its efficiency as an one of the exercises for lower abdominal toning.

    While I was doing some reps watching TV yesternight, I noticed quite subtly that when you go rather slower on pushing and pulling of the ab-wheel and actually hold the position for a split section, you would feel a subtle yet firm tension in the lower abdominal region.

    You ought to try it out.

    Other exercises that target the lower abdominal region are the Hindu-push ups,
    the boat pose in Pilates and Yoga, heck speaking of Yoga, you ever tried the peacock pose?

    In this abdominal exercise, you are literally balancing your lower abdominal muscles on your conjoined elbows...talk about strengthening both the abdominal and arm muscles.

    Well, I'm about the hit the ab-wheel again.

    Best Flat Tummy Exercises For Great Female Abs

    Just giving another author a chance to showcase their information on abdominal exercies...while I take a rest actually.

    Are there flat tummy exercises that are the best for great female abs? Abs-olutely! To make this list, the female abs exercises must be safe, effective and can be done nearly anywhere. Your abs can be worked out every day. Here are great flat tummy exercises:



    1. Tummy Isometric Crunch - exhale, then suck in your stomach as far as you can, hold for about 15 seconds. Relax and breathe. Visualize moving your bellybutton straight toward your back. Holding in your tummy muscles and tensing your abs is a good way of firming and strengthening them. You will also become more aware of how to control your tummy muscles. Repeat several times. This exercise can be done anywhere, anytime.



    Note - if you have high blood pressure, do not hold your breath for extended periods of time.



    2. Rectus Abdominis Tummy Exercises (sounds great, no?):



    a. Lie on your back on the floor with bent knees and your feet flat on the floor, knees and feet spread apart the width of your hips.



    b. Place your hands gently on the sides of your head for support, spreading your elbows so you cannot see them.



    c. With your chin tucked toward your chest, gently curl upward and forward so that your head, neck and shoulder blades lift off the floor and your lower back presses against the floor (if you want, start with your head resting on a pillow which has your head and neck in the correct position to begin).



    d. Pause just a moment, then gently return to the starting position.



    e. Repeat several times.



    Note - do not use your arms to complete the curl. If you can see your elbows, you're cheating. Do not put your feet under anything since this lessens the effectiveness of these types of flat tummy exercises. If this female abs exercise is too difficult for you, do the next one below.



    3. Sit-Back Flat Tummy Exercises - if your female abs muscles are weak and you have trouble lifting yourself off the floor in #2 above, here is an alternate flat tummy exercise for you:



    a. Start in a sitting position on the floor with your knees bent, feet flat on the floor (secure your feet under a piece of furniture).



    b. Cross your arms over your chest and roll your head and shoulders forward toward your chest.



    c. Gently and slowly lean back, keeping your head and shoulders tucked. Continue until you begin to feel your stomach muscles contracting.



    d. Then try to lean back just a bit more if you can and hold that position until your muscles start shaking. Try to hold this position with your muscles shaking for five seconds, then ease back to the upright sitting position.



    e. Repeat in a few seconds.



    4. Reduce Chewing Exercises - yes, as in jaw muscles used for excessive chewing as in overeating. Reducing overeating or exercising those jaw muscles less may be necessary to have great female abs. No one can see great female abs if they are covered with body fat! Having great female abs may require losing some body fat. Losing body fat means:



    a. Cardio exercise on a regular basis - getting the heartbeat up with fun whole-body workouts several times a week.



    b. Healthy eating habits - eating healthy foods, eliminating sodas/junk food and taking in fewer calories than you burn each day.



    c. Besides flat tummy exercises, strength training for the whole body - any muscle tissue you add will burn extra calories 24/7.



    Besides looking great, having great female abs is about good health. Visually and physically, the midsection is the center of the body and the foundation of strength. Weak abdominals leave a woman weaker looking and vulnerable to lower back pain. At first, the goal is to build up the basic strength in the female abs area with flat tummy exercises. And remember, always check with your health care provider before starting any exercise program. Start out slowly and gradually build up your strength and repetitions.



    For great abs and good health, the ideal is to reduce body fat down to no lower than 15-20% for women. Sometimes, doing flat tummy exercises is the EASY part, losing excess body fat is the TOUGH part. Eat right, exercise right. It may take time, just do not give up on your dream of having those great female abs.

    The Ab-Wheel: Perhaps the Best Abdominal Exercise Equipment

    The first time I was introduced to the ab-wheel was in the year 2000.

    It was while working out in the gym downstairs in our office building.

    A friend challenged me to do 10 repetitions on this abdominal exercise device and imagine the testosterone driven reaction when I sighed and said “please, what the heck can that do?”

    A lot.

    I tried one repetition and though I made it to about 8 (okay, I’ll never tell you what the exact number was but still…); I knew this ab-wheel thingy was on to something for abdominal exercises.

    Your arms, upper back and shoulders benefit from the forward pushing and pulling.

    Moreover, (of course considering my dietetic habits), within about a few weeks, I got not a 6-pack, but an 8-pack folks.

    For how to use it: start with a hand on each grip and kneel down with both knees together on the floor. Lock your arms and hold the wheel at your knees on the floor.

    Slowly roll the wheel out and away from your knees and continue going forward until your hands are beyond your head.

    Do not touch the floor; your body should be 3-6 inches above the floor. Return to the starting position by pulling in with your abdominal muscles and arching your back.

    Keep your arms straight and use your core muscles to return to the starting position again. Breathe in at the start and exhale on the way down. 7-10 repetitions equal one set AND one hell of a workout!

    Most of all; dig this, if you go to a store like Sports Authority, Champs or even an Ancient Market, you can get it for only $9.95.

    I don’t know about you, but if a device that inexpensive can get not only my abs, but perhaps my whole upper-body in great shape and tone, it sure has got my vote.
